That greenhouse makes me think of the '76-'81 camaro/firebird for some reason. I hate to say this but I think something more 914ish would be fitting.:D

BIGJake111 03-10-2016 09:50 AM

The techart top with a defined roll hoop would look the best IMO.

That and the color!!! I think in a different color with a blacked-out hoop, it would look cool. Someone posted this here a while back....sorry for the horrid photoshop of the hoop.

Imagine this in red, with a black hoop.

particlewave 03-10-2016 10:23 AM

Stelan - I applaud your creativity and initiative. But...

It is hard to look at. The forward sweep of the hoop doesn't flow with anything on the car and further adds to the "which end is the front" that our cars already suffer from. It's unpleasant to the eye.
Being above the windshield, it will also catch a lot of air, as previously mentioned. I don't imagine it would take long for this thing to rip itself off

The bubble shape of the rear "window" also makes it look like the Porsche Pope-Mobile.

^^^^ Here's the pic I couldn't attach....

On the red renderings it appears that the leading edge of the hoop is higher that the trailing edge of the windscreen. This is what the C6 Corvettes had with their Targa top design, and it caused severe buffeting. Somebody developed an aftermarket spacer that fit between the rear hatch lid latch and the body to allow air flow and reduce interior turbulence. With the top off the cockpit was like one of those tubes people stand in and try to grab loose paper money. The 911 Targa did not suffer from that problem.

and if I was any better at photoshop I would be terrible ...

The only way I see to do this is to make a top that also replaces the rear trunk lid. Otherwise, you're going to end up with the short and tiny Targa bubble that has been shown in the renderings.

BRAN 03-11-2016 08:09 AM

dibs on the designs :rolleyes:

have no idea about doability, concerning the glass (or equivalent) :rolleyes:
But it looks cool, no doubt :cool:

BIGJake111 03-11-2016 03:32 PM

@BRAN

It looks extra great on your car considering its outlaw theme.

stelan 03-11-2016 08:07 PM

The rendering may be a little deceiving I looked at the actual completed model edge on the top compared to the windshield and is lower, beaides with mu poor knowledge of aerodynamics and experience with my other porsches and c5 the air gets deflected up from the windshield up, I made a targa for one of the 356 speedsters I made and it was the quietest ride you can have on an open top car I ever had and the windshield on the 356 is tiny, anyway I should be see on the first test drive with the actual thing. Those photoshoped ones look way cool, keep on playing with it

BRAN 03-12-2016 02:42 AM

Thank you, guys. Can't wait to see your finished "real" hardtop, Stelan!:cheers:

I did a quick research and even found a company for car glass roofs/concepts etc. (Home | freeglass) ...not so sure about their interest in "micro" quantities...:D

BRAN 03-19-2016 02:20 AM

As the Porsche 550 and the Karmann Ghia seem to share a lot of genes, how about a Karmann Ghia Top :D

There are a lot of good looking renderings being shown here but I will hold out for a folding hardtop to replace the factory soft top. If Mazda can do it with their Miata then Porsche will eventually with the Boxster. One can hope it would be backward compatible. With modern alloys and/or composites it can be made to be strong and lighweight.
Stupid question: with any of these hardtops do you have to remove the top to service the engine ?

BIGJake111 03-19-2016 04:29 AM

@BRAN

I like that look, it's definitely more VW then porsche, but that really isn't a bad thing.

@rfuerst911sc you have to remove the factory hardtop to get to the top side of the engine so I would assume you must do the same with any of these, particularly if they fit over the soft top as it is down like the factory top does.

stelan 03-19-2016 10:43 PM

Nope on mine there is rear hatch with clear window and gives you access to the engine, the none targa version model is finish and we are going to splash molds next

How could the convertible top be placed in service mode in this case? Or would the convertible top be removed before top installation?
