New used wheels

What do you guys think about this set of 18in wheels compared to my old 17's?

The new ones do for your front bumper and side skirt better.

However, I feel the old looks more period for the Boxster and slightly more timeless.

The look you have going for you on your Boxster is best complimented by the new though.

New for the street, old for the track

I like the Carrera 18's better and 17's are better for track/AX if for no other reason than tires are cheaper.

Yes I see the tires are going to be more expensive for the 18in wheels. The wheels came with tires but they are junk. Oh well such is the never ending cost of upgrades I guess.

IMHO.... the 18" Light Alloy Carrera Wheels are the best looking wheels going. I had them on my 993 cab too. They weren't available for 986s until the 2003/2004 model years. Close enough for there use on pre-2003 986s without looking out of place. Nice choice.

These wheels came off of a 2003S. They are factory wheels with the off sets and wheel size near the valve stem. They actually seem quite a bit lighter than the 17's I have on there now. When I get new tires mounted I will weigh all the wheels to see how much lighter they really are. It would be nice to lose a little unsprung weight.

If the old set doesn't have the Width and offset by the valve stem I believe that means the wheel is a replica, which can be good (as there are several reputable replica makers, Mille Miglia, and some of the Italian ones) or bad (as there is a lot of junk out there too). Also I didn't think that style came in a 17.

If the new 18" wheels are lighter, the new tires may be lighter too (less rubber because of a shorter sidewall? each brand is different) you may very well lose some unsprung weight...

the Carrera wheels

are beautiful indeed.. :-)http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1456775516.jpg

Nice! Love the new wheels.

Here is my '03 S with stock 18" Carrera wheels. I think they look great. Easy to clean too compared to multi spoke wheels.

PS I read somewhere that these wheels are 6 pounds lighter that the turbo twists. That is significant unsprung weight.

The 18 inch carrera's look terrible. I'll take them off your hands for $200. You won't ever have to see them on your car again!

I think they are the best wheel going on a 986! That's why I bought 15 of them, including 6 new ones.

wheels or Boxsters?

imari 02-29-2016 05:05 PM

The new look great!!!

boxxster 02-29-2016 05:21 PM

I've always liked the carrera 18s. They remind me of ferrari 360 wheels. Matter of fact, when I was driving through the neighbourhood yesterday 2 kids (12-13ish) walking down the street yelled "Nice Ferrari!!" as I passed by. Maybe it was the wheels?!

amagalla 02-29-2016 05:34 PM

I'm partial to the 18" Carreras myself.
