New used wheels
What do you guys think about this set of 18in wheels compared to my old 17's?

The new ones do for your front bumper and side skirt better.
However, I feel the old looks more period for the Boxster and slightly more timeless. The look you have going for you on your Boxster is best complimented by the new though. |
New for the street, old for the track

I like the Carrera 18's better and 17's are better for track/AX if for no other reason than tires are cheaper. |

IMHO.... the 18" Light Alloy Carrera Wheels are the best looking wheels going. I had them on my 993 cab too. They weren't available for 986s until the 2003/2004 model years. Close enough for there use on pre-2003 986s without looking out of place. Nice choice.

If the new 18" wheels are lighter, the new tires may be lighter too (less rubber because of a shorter sidewall? each brand is different) you may very well lose some unsprung weight... |
the Carrera wheels
are beautiful indeed.. :-)http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1456775516.jpg

Nice! Love the new wheels.

Here is my '03 S with stock 18" Carrera wheels. I think they look great. Easy to clean too compared to multi spoke wheels.
http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1456777291.jpg PS I read somewhere that these wheels are 6 pounds lighter that the turbo twists. That is significant unsprung weight. |
The 18 inch carrera's look terrible. I'll take them off your hands for $200. You won't ever have to see them on your car again!

The new look great!!!

I've always liked the carrera 18s. They remind me of ferrari 360 wheels. Matter of fact, when I was driving through the neighbourhood yesterday 2 kids (12-13ish) walking down the street yelled "Nice Ferrari!!" as I passed by. Maybe it was the wheels?!

Love the look of the lightweight wheels!

Great choice on the wheels and the side skirts.
|
They look great. What are the actual size of the wheels with offset? Are you using spacers?
Thanks |
The turbo twisties are just hideous looking, I have always thought the twisties are a bad choice for any car, of any era. The new ones are so much better looking it isn't even worth discussing.

On mine the numbers stamped on the wheels by the stems are; Fronts - 7.5/50 - Rears 9/52. |
My fronts are 8/57 and the rears are 10/58.
They're off a 2006 997. |

The 18 inch are front 7.5/et50, rear 9/et52. |

The 17's weigh 43.8 lbs each on the front and 50.8 lbs on the rear. The 18's weigh 39 lbs each on the front and 44.8 lbs each on the rear. This weight is with the tires mounted. The 17's have one year old Hankook V12's and the 18's have beat to hell Pirelli's on them. With new tires on the 18's I will probably gain some weight, but they should still be lighter than the 17's by at least 16 lbs total :) |
