Can we call ours 718 now?

https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/products/porsche-boxster-model-series-718-roadster-12163.html

It's here.

Quick facts 2.0 in the base and 2.5 with variable turbine geometry in the S.

Base is 300hp and S is 350. Officially 100 more for each then where they stood at the start.

Base 0 to 100kmph 4.7

S 0 to 100kmph 4.2 (Wow!)

Top speeds in the 170s I think.

Manual still available.

Also the Boxster is now more expensive then the Cayman.

can you call yours a 987 or a 981 ?

I think this car is still the 981 internally.

Can you call a 996 a 911?

VGM911 01-26-2016 06:50 PM

When Nissan re-named the Stanza (to "Altima"), the old Stanzas did not become Altimas.

So....when Porsche introduces a new 781, the older Boxsters will not become 781s; however, the Boxster name survives the change.

Cool! That's pretty official. Nice to see images that aren't spy shots of a test mule.
Honestly, there are some touches I really like.
Kind of dig the floating Porsche nameplate.

The taillights have been trimmed and are more understated, and I like the smaller ducktail spoiler. The huge lights and awkward "integrated" spoiler of the 981 never struck me right.

Finally adopted the 918 steering wheel which is a very trim and classic throwback.

Anxious to drive one to see how the 4 pot feels.

I won't be calling mine a 718 though. It is what it is. ;)

VGM911 01-26-2016 08:27 PM

It looks beautiful.....very nice evolution of the original design.

I'm wondering if there will be a "badge delete" option relating to the "718 Boxster S" at the rear.

particlewave 01-26-2016 08:36 PM

I still don't like the headlights. :D

I grew up with the round headlight Porsches and nothing else looks right.
I want these...

If not fishing line will help do the job to remove the mouthful.

Amen to that!

My Subaru Liberty (legacy) has a 2.5 flat 4. I think I'll change the badge to say
718 Liberty S.

BIGJake111 01-27-2016 03:13 AM

I have to say, the design was a step in the right direction. The car keeps the masculine feel of the 981 but lost a lot of the hard edges. The interior reminds me a lot more of the 987 and 986 then 981. Also the rear has a much cleaner look with the lights.

This car makes the 987 look more attractive to me then it had when we only had the 986 and 981 to compare it to.

ekam 01-27-2016 03:19 AM

Nope. Mine has a naturally balanced flat-6 and I like it that way.

Agreed, while I like the changes to the rear and interior (everything cleaned up and softened, yet more muscular, as Jake said), and the profile is very nice, the front end is still a bit off to me.

Those darned headlights are even larger and more square, as are the grilles, and that hard line on the nose doesn't help. It makes the front end look too tall and almost like a front engined car. Un-Porsche like to me anyway.

Now that I've thought about it a little more, I'd also delete the "PORSCHE" letters on the back, as well, to clean things up.

I'll say one thing for sure, Porsche knows how to advertise. :)

A liitle bit more video material where you can see the car better:

Infos on the Porsche website:
Porsche 718 Boxster S - Porsche Deutschland
Porsche 718 Boxster - Porsche Deutschland

Webspecial:
Mitten im Sport. Der neue 718 Boxster. | Porsche Deutschland

In the webspecial you can hear the exhaust note. Well it's a 4 cylinder.

Markus

BIGJake111 01-27-2016 06:06 AM

I think the front has a very Mclaren sort of feel. Not that I care too much for that, but it does look high end.

jb92563 01-27-2016 06:39 AM

Don't like it. Not buying one :p

It seems to have continued the trend of losing the classic smooth soothing curves and has got a lot more aggressive and fad like hardness to the shape.

The shape change is like going from Marilyn Monroe to an East German woman body builder. Auto shape changes are typically cyclic as folks get bored with all the cars looking the same so perhaps they will go smooth and curvy again in 10 years.

I'm appreciating my 986 a lot more now :).
