Yes, both front and rear come on. Not the side lights on the fenders - at least not on my 986.
It's a legal requirement in some European countries so we all get it. When wondering why they felt it necessary, I imagined a Frenchman riding his bicycle through a medieval township with no lighting in the alleys and slamming into a parked car. His baguette broke and his beret got muddy in my imagination, but those are probably not relevant details.
It's a very old rule, one that presumably predates lights on bicycles!?!?!
