New Boxster Owner - First Impressions

A little background...I'm a car/motorcycle junkie, and have been my entire life. My first car was a '74 VW Super Beetle (still one of my favorite car of all time). My first bike was a Kawasaki H3. In the period between now and my first rides, I've had more cars/bikes than I could list, from Ducati's and Honda's to Porsche's and Corvette's, and everything in between...
As a 911/Carrera owner, I never considered a Boxster...Not sure why...Long story short, I just bought a '98 Boxster with TIP, and finally took it out for a real drive this afternoon...

I've have to say, it's an absolute blast to drive! Actually, quite a bit more enjoyable than my '78 SC, which was a Euro version with a built motor no doubt. I still haven't figured out why, but there's something about this car that really stands out. It's no speed demon, but the combination of its characteristics makes for a fun-filled package.

I certainly need to get more mileage under my belt with the car, but for the moment, I'm surprised it took me so long to consider one.

Welcome, I bought a 97/Tip a couple of months ago. I have never driven a car that handles quite like this car. What a joy to wind around in the mountains with the top down. I am still getting used to thumb shifting.

Same here, bought a mint 90k 99 from an old lady on a whim and it's a total hoot to drive, way more fun than my 996 X50. And did you that these things are almost free? I paid $6500, thats less than the 996 turbo's muffler and tune!!!!!!

Welcome and I agree they are fun cars to drive. I just got mine last July and it's my first Porsche. I drove it a little today, it was a beautiful day here and driving it does remind me of Corvettes I used to own. It's smaller but gives me a similar feeling of driving a Corvette, maybe not as fast but it's fast enough for me. You're lucky your in Florida, you can drive it year round!

Bought a 99 5-speed with 57k in July. I bought mine from David Johnson in the RMR who brought it to Colorado from Maryland. It used to be Mark Hubley's. Both Mark and David took great care of it. Really enjoy driving with the top down. It took me a while to get a P-car after I got rid of a2-seater I owned after high school, but I am loving it.

Boxster is not like a corvette in no way whatsoever.

The mid-engine set up feels so good! Even just puttering around town is great. And getting it onto a back road in the hills is simply amazing! I've had some fine handling cars in the past, but the Box outshines them all.

Ok, first chance I've gotten to pull the cover off due to business travel.
This is a not-so-glamorous shot in the garage.

This is a picture from the prior owner. I almost didn't go look at the car, because this particular color doesn't seem to photograph well. The magnificence of this color (Ocean Jade Metallic) has to be seen in person to be appreciated. When the cover was pulled off, my jaw dropped.

We had a previous forum member who owned the same color 986 and was a photography enthusiast. He modified the car quiet a bit as well with black two piece wheels and a Momo steering wheel if memory serves. Search for Djomlas.

Wow, beautiful pictures! I guess the color can photograph well....Looks like he's a Ducati fan also, so we have something in common.

Now I see what the "amber delete" is all about. I'm kind of a freak about originality, but we'll see where I go with this one longer term.

Thanks for the link!

It's expensive but you can try and swap to litronic lights which was a factory option. Won't be on your window sticker but it would be entirely possible for a boxster to come out of the factory like the way it will look.

And it sure would look good!

Nice car - love the color!

Yes, there is a world of difference between a 78 SC and a Boxster! I also own both and can say that they are a great pair of cars.

			Such a beautiful Boxster!
You're right, that color doesn't photograph well. It usually comes out over-saturated and looking like that ugly 1980s GM candy turquoise. In person it's much more subtle and classy looking. Your garage photo is closer to the true color.
