I was curious on Saturday afternoon after working on the Boxster. So for a laugh I called the dealership for a price on an oil change. They said around ~$300.00. Holy Cow!

Brumos quoted me $330 to do that, with an inspection. No thanks, I'm able to do that myself - plus I actually enjoy doing the maintenance.

When the Dealership does an oil change they add Unicorn urine as an additive (Helps lubricate the IMSB) so you only need to do the service every 15,000 miles.

It's a pleasant experience for a new Porsche owner. It's good for new owners to go and agree to all the recommended repairs and when they give it to you they even wash the carpet.

You spend like 6k on the visit but it's so worth it. They wash the engine and underbelly. The next time you do an oil change yourself, you know everything is perfect. From suspension arms to bushings and everything. Onetime cost to agree to all their request but you et a great vehicle back that you can work on (:

Who pays $2500 for tires??? Even if you have cash to blow, I think a tiger as a pet would be much cooler than $2500 tires for the street.

Forums like this exist for a large part to help correct mistakes made by DIY guys.

With a dealer oil change, the service is done by a professional with eyes for details and potential problems and the experience to direct what to look for. You'll get a better quality filter than you can get at PepBoys, too.

You also avoid the danger of crawling under your car while it's up on jackstands.

If you're truly good at this stuff go right ahead, but there is ZERO reason to badmouth dealers. In the long run, you can't operate any car without one and to think otherwise is delusional.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not badmouthing my dealer at all. Brumos has been great to me all around. I generally get my filter and wipers there, as the prices are good and I get a chance to ogle the showroom displays from their museum. Personally I don't see the benefit in $330 for an oil change and inspection when I can pocket the remainder after oil/filter/crush ring and get some garage therapy in the process.

Oil $50 Walmart (Mobile 1)
Filter $10 (NAPA)
Crush washer $1

Total materials: $61
Dealer Labor: $239-269 per hour ????
I'll bet it only takes them 1/2 hour $478-538 per hour ?????????
DIY With Ramps takes 1 hour( Jacking up 1.5 hours) and that's just to make sure Oil is all out

No reason to bad mouth dealers @ $230+/hour. Now I understand why there is such a line for Oil changes outside my local dealer

I'm going to have to eat my words someday when I have to go there

Oil changes are about as easy as they can be on a Boxster

There are two reasons to go to the dealer for routine service. One is to catch mechanical issues while the car is still under warranty as well as build a rapport with the dealer so that when your engine/major component needs to be replaced just as the warranty ends, they will extend goodwill to you and fix it at a discount. Second to get any software updates that may have been made since your car left the factory.
