If the track had wider curbing in all the corners and gravel run-out zones, the car might not have flipped. Going sideways on grass and dirt it dug in.

Ouch I've seen that one before. I think there may be a breakdown of it on here somewhere. I also think I saw another view of it from a following car but I can't seem to find it now. Definitely not fun and a reminder to me to just drive off if I get in a situation like that.

My guess would be he tried to steer back on track (Bad). Instead of lifting driving straight and turning back on track after getting the car slowed down.

Trust me a spin and then rollover is not fun

Lesson learned. If you go off track just go straight until you slow down before reentering the track. That's was nasty.

Can't show my family this type of stuff or they would freak out every time I do a track day.

Definitely! I only do motorcycle track days, and the last thing you would ever do if off in the dirt is try to turn before you've slowed down (unless you were on a dirt bike ).

I would not drive a go kart on that track. A Rennlist member died after sustaining serious burns there.

Wow...that is a pretty scary situation. Especially for the passenger!

I have never done a car trackday and wondered how the Box would do in a rollover at the track. I guess I have one example of how it would do now!

Question for trackday goers: I've seen people doing trackdays with the top down as well as up. Is this your choice or the trackday providers?

you can run with it up or down, your choice. some drivers chose to have it up for aerodynamics. i prefer down for visibility and the pure driving pleasure of having the top down

only requirement on track days is if you drive a convertible it has to have roll hoops or any other roll over protection system.

I ran with one group that required me to have it down, they said they saw one come off one time... Next time I ran at that track (The FIRM in FL) with a different group they required me to have it up...

Most other groups require up, some will let you run with it down if you have arm restraints.

A Boxster in inherently unlikely to roll over. It has a low center of gravity and a great suspension
It takes hitting a berm or curb or something sideways to induce a rollover

Top should be up.
It keeps your body parts in the car
Also should you somehow manage to roll the car, it keeps a lot of the dirt and rock out

Agreed - he should have let the car run off track left and gathered it back slowly. Stuff happens at the track. This is why my track car has a full cage, and I wear a HANS. I also think you should only track a car you can afford to write off.

Also a great example of why you don't want an early apex...

No, thankfully that was not me.

I've not tracked my car yet because I'm not sure I want the expense of the wear on tyres/brakes etc. This takes the expense to a whole other level though.

Is a hardtop adequate for rollover protection instead of roll hoops? I used to go to the track in 2000-2001 when I first got my Boxster and they said that was OK. I went off the track but went straight, no turning until you slow down....

If its a metal one, it will add some protection.

The factory roll bars are pretty good unless you are very tall and the top of your helmet is above the roll bars.
You can always add a roll bar extension for extra protection and is required generally if you have some performance mods. its a good idea in any case

I was taught both feet in ( brake and clutch ) and don`t turn the wheel until you gather your thoughts. Works.
