I don't know if it's the same for p cars, but there used to be something called a neutral safety switch that prevented you from starting the car while in gear. Check a Bentley manual to see if there's something similar on the Tiptronic transmission.

There is a position switch at the base of the Tip selector lever that tells the ECM, for the trans, what position it is in. The selector knob and the selection cover have to be removed to get to it. That is possibly where the problem is.

Once it is started does it drive and shift ok in both "D" and "M?"
Have you checked the sensor at the base of the shift rod as I suggested?

tip problem

So I went on a two week holiday and left the 986 in the garage.Home today so I went and started the car as it hadn`t run for a bit. Dead cold ran for a few minutes.Turned it off and tried to remove the key...no luck. It ran for maybe 5 min went through the gears in M and A parked and tried to put in in P. Indicator flashed R and something I didnt see in the past was in D the light was blinking. Anyway put in in the garage. Engine would turn off but all the lights radio etc stayed on and couldnt remove the key.So I disconnected the battery. Tried the key and it came out like a new one and the steering locked as it should. With the ignition switch not energized it works fine. Might this problem be the electrical part of the ignition switch ?

Fixed

Well after many requests on multiple forums my car is fixed. Of all of the suggestions which I appreciate none where the problem.
The culprit was a small pivot rod that the shifter plate rides on. My Indie removed the cable and cleaned the rod with some fine wet paper. There was a black spot of grime and build up that would not allow it to move freely. Greased it up and good to go. Not a cable adjustment or switches.
