Programming keys

When I got may 2003 earlier this month, it came with two original keys. One had no electronic guts in it at all, and the buttons were worn through. The second was complete, the buttons worn through, but the #2 and #3 button open their respective lids.
I see where everything about these keys is replaceable, and had the following question:
If the transponder is the device that communicates with the car's computer (immobilizer?), can I transfer just the transponder to a new key remote, with its new electronics (new circuit board), and not have to have it programmed? In other words, does the reprogramming reprogram the transponder, the electronics, or both? Has anyone done this?

If your transfer both the electronics and the pill, all you have to do is cut the key.

The programming is to code the new transmitter (not the transponder) to the car. The transponder is for starting the car.

Not quite an exact answer to your question, but check this thread out:

So yes, just transferring the guts of the key works fine. All it takes to start the car is having the transponder near the transponder coil and a properly cut key.

I think you may be inadvertently causing even more confusion.

His question was whether the programming was for the transponder or the electronics. In other words, he wants to know if he buys a new transmitter, would it still need to be programmed. The answer is yes, since the programming is not contained in the transponder pill.

He never asked about transferring the circuit board (transmitter).

Thank you, all who replied.
The #1 button on the key with the electronics does not work. Sorry, should have said that, but it just skipped my mind when I said that the #2 and #3 buttons open their respective lids. I was hoping that the transmitter did not need programming. Since #1 button is the one that is used the most, I may have to go for the whole thing -- unless there is a fix just for this???

The button is most likely bad. It's a common issue.
