What is your average MPG

I am currently at 20.8 with 1,400 miles on my '05 non S (EPA is 20 City/28 Highway)

KRZTACO 04-14-2006 09:08 AM

2000 986 S

usually 19-20MPG 52,000 miles

eslai 04-14-2006 09:17 AM

I only get about 17 to 18 MPG.

bigislandboxster 04-14-2006 09:30 AM

Can be quite variable depending upon driving conditions....I'm driving on guestimate about 60/40 city/highway, and I'm getting around 22-24 a gallon.....If I drive on the highway I can top out around 29-30.....

Do you have the 2.7?

KRZ

bigislandboxster 04-14-2006 09:37 AM

2.5 L with just over 56,000 miles on her.... :)

smith12895 04-14-2006 09:39 AM

I'm doing great! 23.5 mpg !! Mostly canyon driving, not really city and not really highway, but it's been raining a lot and I haven't really been pushing it much... yet. :D

BuffaloBoxster 04-14-2006 09:56 AM

I average about 20, but on a drive from Buffalo to DC I got just under 30 on the highway, and I wasn't exactly taking it easy.

On a related note:

I recently moved. I used to have about a 3 mile commute each way on suburban roads, stop and go traffic most of the way. I now have a 17 mile commute each way, with most of that on the highway.

Before I would go home for lunch, so I made that round trip twice, about 12 miles a day, and now I've got about a 35 mile round trip.

I've found that I'm not really filling my turbocharged Jetta much more than I used to even with the huge increase in mileage. I used to fill weekly, and now I probably fill maybe one more time per month. The car gets great mileage on the highway - off boost - and is an absolute pig in stop and go - on boost.

Something to think about if you're considering a turbocharged car...

bmussatti 04-14-2006 10:45 AM

About 23 mpg with 1,700 miles on a 987S. 90% highway.

TriGem2k 04-14-2006 11:05 AM

16-18MPG depending on how i drive...

velvet_jones 04-14-2006 11:13 AM

23 mpg-90% freeway driving 70-75 mph.

Perfectlap 04-14-2006 11:14 AM

too low!
damn gas went up again. $2.77
$30 got me 3/4's full.

(yeah I'know other's have it worse but you should see how much I pay in car insurance and NYC parking and these toll roads are getting ridiculuous)

When the weather is cold I get about 20-22 mpg. I tend to short shift and go easy on my cold tires until I'm at 180 temp.

When the weather is nice and the top is down I drive fast and hang out in third gear like its a long lost friend. 17 mpg.

RandallNeighbour 04-14-2006 11:42 AM

I got less than 20 mpg around town before my new 02 sensors. Now I get about 23 mph in town and over 25 on my "road trips" to the country where I hammer it the whole time. Go figure.

If your boxster has 60k on it, replace your 02 sensors before they go out and throw a CE light... you'll be glad you did and enjoy the fuel savings as well.

I believe performance went up too after I changed them, but that's just my butt dyno.

70Sixter 04-14-2006 12:03 PM

OBC says 25-26.5 in normal (95% open road) driving. Almost no stop-n-go. Regular but not constant trips to redline in lower gears,

Got almost 30 on mostly Interstate trip to Tampa area and back in Dec 05 @ 80 mph average.

Early months 22+ mpg until broken in.

ford40 04-14-2006 12:04 PM

I was getting about 23-24 on my daily driving and 30 on my long highway trips and I was getting a shudder sometimes as the car reved down to idle....I called the dealer service group and was told that my mileage was "too good" and that I should drive the car harder...more 3.5 to 4+k plus shifts. Well sure enough my city mileage went down to about 22 and the highway stayed at 30 and the shuddering is drasticly reduced....can only assume that my city driving was "clogging" the system. Only about 8500 miles on the car to date....bought the car with 3500 miles on it 5 months ago...must have benn someones weekend car but is now driven daily. Very happy I have a 100k CPO warranty!

eslai 04-14-2006 02:23 PM

I really wish I knew how you guys are getting fuel economy in the 20's...

bhduxbury 04-14-2006 03:07 PM

average about 20.5 with compressor on, about 21.5 with it off.

Uncle Bob 04-14-2006 04:13 PM

19 ~ 23 for me at just about 3,500 mi.

AUDIOGUY 04-14-2006 05:55 PM

I drive about 10 miles per day back and forth to work... probably 50 or so on the weekends. I fill up every 220 miles or so. So do the math.... What is it 14 gal per tank divided by 220 miles.. roughly 16 mpg around town.

I think the important question is how much are we spending per mile. 1 tank of super is 37.00 here in NJ divided by 220 miles for that tank = 16.81 cents per mile!

I wonder what our buddies in the Hummers are spending per mile....

I'm getting between 21 to 24 miles per gallon, depending how spirited the drive is. 2002 model 2.7 eng,

jangobox 04-17-2006 06:35 AM

I get about 22-23 mpg.

slogans7 04-18-2006 05:59 AM

I've been getting 22.8 with a lot of freeway driving. With premium gas now around $3.15, it's still painful.

CA_Boxster 04-20-2006 01:36 AM

Haven't done the math in a while but it used to consistently be in the high teens. If it ever hit 20mpg I was pretty happy about it. My commute is short and generally not over 50mph aside from a 1 mile stretch of highway that I hit (with a lot of throttle).

You keep your gall fill up receipts and write your mileage on them. Then create a database and track you mileage, how many gallons you put in the car since you last fill and your new mileage on your next reciept. Once you have 2 receipts you can calculate your last trip from the first mileage record to the second and how much gas you put in the car the second time and see you traveled X miles with X galons of gas give you miles/galon of whatever. Then everytime you fill up just add it to the database and you can see exactly what your MPG was for each time you fill up.

You can then make your database do other things like average miles per fill up, average price of a gallon, average MPG and stuff like that as well.

mtch 04-21-2006 03:49 AM

my daily commute is 27 miles, with 24 miles on the interstate. i avg about 24 mpg for the commute and about 29 mpg on weekend trips. this if for an 03 S

mach schnell 04-21-2006 06:54 AM

drove across desert to Phoenix from just outside LA - about 340 miles one-way. with cruise set at 82mph, I was getting approx 32mpg  Also got a bit of sunburn

I love this car!

Hahaha, I didn't mean "I wish I knew how you guys were CALCULATING" MPG, I meant "I can't believe you guys are getting such good mileage!"

Although you do raise a good point--if we're not all using the same method for calculating our MPG, this exercise is a bit inaccurate. I'm just going by what the onboard computer tells me my MPG is. I reset it whenever I fill up and then notice where it's at when I refuel.

Mine's always around 17 to 18 MPG when all's said and done. Not enough freeway driving I guess...

SD987 04-21-2006 08:38 AM

"Not enough freeway driving I guess..." - Eslai

"About 340 miles one-way. with cruise set at 82mph, I was getting approx 32mpg" - Mach Schnell

That's what I notice most about the fuel economy in the 987, in that the deltas you see on other convertibles, i.e. top-down vs. top-up or highway vs. city are much wider in the Box.

Driving around town with the top lowered I can watch the fuel gauge go down between intersections, but on the highway, with the top up the Box is a Porsche Prius. On this theme, have you guys seen the low fuel message in the 987 OBC? It says "Consider Remaing Range". I thought it was pretty amusing.

slogans7 04-21-2006 09:59 AM

Eric - get a job 50 miles from your home and drive around 75-85 mph to and from. And don't use use your 987 for short trips to the grocery store. BTW, Karen and I just got a Vespa for our town errands.

eslai 04-21-2006 10:21 AM

"Consider Remaining Range", yeah I found that very amusign the first time too. So polite, like, "Now, I know you're not a dummy and you probably already know this, but you, well... you might wanna think about gas soon, y'know what I mean?" :)

A Vespa. That sounds good. But driving from Mira Mesa to Poway every day (a wonderful, traffic light strewn drive  ) probably wouldn't be so fun on one...

insite 04-21-2006 12:04 PM

well, i just burned through fifteen gallons of VP-109 in 94 relaxing miles.

RandallNeighbour 04-21-2006 12:31 PM

insite, would that be 109 octane race fuel?

and how did you burn so much of it in less than 100 miles? Were you driving 145 mph the whole time?

eslai 04-21-2006 01:13 PM

Sounds like he was at the track. :) In what, i have no idea.

NickCats 05-18-2008 07:27 PM

Alright guys, just got back from Washington DC.

We had a good trip. 750 miles in 11 hours each way.

A little disappointed with the MPG though :

1st tank - 22 mpg
2nd tank - 24 mpg
3rd tank - 23 mpg
4th tank - 23 mpg
5th tank - 22 mpg

Not as good as I expected. I average 21 mpg going to work and back.

Cruise was set at 80 mph, AC on, fully loaded ( me, wife, luggage )

This is in a 99 2.5 with 50k miles on the odo.

Anything I should take a look at ?

Thanks,

Nick

Grizzly 05-18-2008 07:50 PM

Nick,

Did you reset the OBC at each fill-up? Your mileage seems low to me. Ellen just got 27.9 making that trip to West Virginia and back. If you're not resetting, your mileage is being averaged with all your previous driving.

NickCats 05-18-2008 08:18 PM

Hey Griz !

Yeah, I thought that was low too...

No OBC on my 99. I was just dividing miles driven / gallons purchased.

Car runs like a champ though. Any ideas ?

Nick

Grizzly 05-18-2008 08:28 PM

Let your wife drive, maybe?

Seriously, I'd put a tune-up on it and change the air filter if you haven't done it lately. I think you should be doing a little better than 22-24 mpg highway.
