Looking...U/D pulley recommendations

Like the title says. I may as well install one while the engine is out.

I have not found anyone ship a UPD for less then this one at Pelican.

There is also a good tutorial in the DIY section here:

I used the RSS pulley, I got it from someone on here that never installed it, but I probably would have gone with it anyway because of the counterholding tool and the holes in the pulley for holding it.

For cutting the boss (which was the hardest part, but for you it will be much easier with the engine out) I taped all around it with blue painter's tape, especially covering the crank pulley area, to keep any shavings out.

The RSS doesn't come with a new crank bolt, so I bought a new one and a new washer. If I had to do it again I would just get the bolt; the washer was very expensive.

I could feel a small difference and I haven't had any trouble with AC or the battery charging.

Thanks Kram...I have looked at that one. The RSS seems to be a bit cheaper. Do you know if Pedro's kit or any others come with the belt?

The one from Pelican does come with a belt.

Then I suppose it's the same price as the RSS when all is said and done.

On another note, these engines are UGLY...kinda glad they're buried.

Hold the phone. Installing a UDP requires grinding off a boss from the crankcase? If so, is this the boss used for locking the engine at TDC and for use when rebuilding the engine?

If so it's "oh hell no" for me.

Flaps10, are you a pilot?

And according to my independent, we don't rebuilt these lumps, we just replace :-(

Yes, I am.

Even if you are of the "not worth rebuilding" camp, some of us still need to lock the engine in order to time camshafts, change chain tensioners, remove the valve covers for any reason, etc.

That is correct, that boss is used as one method for locking the engine at TDC (although I can't name another off the top of my head). There is still enough left of the hole to lock the engine at TDC again if the original pulley was reinstalled, but when the UDP is on, that boss is blocked by the edge of the pulley and can't be used.
