Ok lets say you changed the intake system of your car. This causes the ECU to compensate for the extra air and basically it's making the ECU run outside it's intended parameter. Would that be considered as tampering with their "intellectual property"?

Anyone have thoughts on this?

To the best of my understanding the answer would be no, this would not be considered tampering with the ECU because the owner did not modify the software inside the ECU and the ECU was originally programmed by the automaker to automatically make some range of adjustment.

In other words, ECU fuel/air mixture compensation IS part of the normal parameters (to the extent provided by the manufacturer).

Interesting thread. Here in Europe, with the ever intrusive EU and it's desire to spread 'socialism', for the benefit of society 'from the atlantic to the urals' the rise is classic car ownership has been exponential..

Not only because with interest rates in the bank, earning you nothing, so you're better off having money in a classic car the even just holds its value, but also becuase new car owners are invaribaly finding that everything has to go back to a main dealer to be plugged onto a propietary sofware system to be diagnosed for waht ever fault it may have.. can't get the key out of the ignition.. main dealer to diagnose the sensor failure, $6,000 for a new steering rack, than you very much..

.. so going back to old school mechanics, with MG's, 1970's - 1980's porsches, BMW's Mercedes etc etc, involves tuning with a timing light, distributor rotor arms, plugs etc..

People are getting fed up with being ripped off, so going 'old skool' !

Just went to the comment link. They sure don't make it easy. They want you to select which of the twenty-seven proposed classes you want to comment on.

How did you do it Timco? Did you make a comment on each of the twenty-seven proposed classes?

I've read that in some German cities they are banning entrance of cars beyond a certain age, which would limit the benefit of owning something classic (although certainly the avenue I would take). I would also do what I do here when cities pass ridiculous laws - I don't go there.

They do forbid access to some cities for environmental issues. They claim to reduce pollution in the city centers by banning old cars and trucks.
