Radar Detector
While I realize speeding is not condoned universally on this site. I happen to use the Passport 9500IX. I like the fact it uses a GPS to weed out false alarms and for locating red light cameras. Since it has a GPS, you can set the home screen as current speed. In this set up I use the detector as a poor mans heads up display.
What are your favorite models and why? |
I'm curious too. I didn't buy a Porsche to drive the speed limit, but I wouldn't mind skipping a few tickets.
|
I have an Escort Solo S3. I love it mainly because it's cordless, and I can easily put it on the dash (I just use one of those sticky gel pads) and swap it from the Box to the 'Treg. It rarely gets any false alarms other than toll booths or construction areas.
I primarily only use it on road trips, or when I'm out of town and don't know the area. It just saved me yesterday on Rt 95 on my way down to DC. -T |
i got the escort 9500 I 2nd hand works amazing must have if you love spirited driving!

I am a fan of the valentine 1. The arrows are more useful than you think. Ever since I stopped using a radar detector I have not gotten a speeding ticket since lol.
|
I use a Valentine One. The arrows are a big plus.
|
Also using the Escort Solo S3. While I know that it's not as effective as something like the Passport Max2 I like that there are no wires and that I can easily move it between the Boxster and BMW. It has definitely saved me a few times.

Been thinking of buying one. They are banned in Ontario. Ive noticed most people get burned by laser gun. Are there any that can help with that? Or, is it too late when the detector detects the laser gun. I am also nervous of radar detector detectors. Are there any out there that can help?
|
I was a cop in my previous years and if you get a laser alert you are pretty much caught already unless you somehow detected a laser reading off another car. One thing a radar detector will not help with is instant on with regular radar. You can place the radar unit on "hold" then turn it on instantly and it is just as affective as a laser. Radar detectors help you out when the officer has their radar on constantly. With more handheld radars and lidars (laser) a radar detector has become less effective.

I'm using a Beltronics and it has saved me a ticket many times over and has paid for itself many times over in the last 3 years.
It detects Laser as well. I find that with the instant-on types although may not help when YOU are directly targeted, does provide an indication of an area where those are being used on other folks and typically gives you enough warning of a HOT area that you could slow down in that area. You want one that is very sensitive to detect radar/laser at the greatest range possible, so that you get enough advance warning to react. I would not hesitate to spend $500 on a unit as it will pay for itself many times over very quickly. Where its illegal though you will need something more stealthy than a regular radar detector, one with a passive quiet mode so it can't be detected. The Beltronics have the anti radar detector detector technology as well. https://www.beltronics.com/store/sti-magnum.html Made in Canada too...eh! |
I have a friend with the V1 he likes it. I have tried both, the V1 is bigger but has the arrows. The escort is smaller and has free firmware updates. I went with the passport as it seems to be easier to keep updated.
Laser is hard. Your only option is a laser shifter ( jams the laser for a few sec) this gives you a little bit of time to slow down. A detector can detect laser off the cars in front of you giving you a little bit more time. I have a few friends who are cops up here. They can only do laser when stationary and even then they do not always get perfect readings, some times they have to hit a car a few times to get a proper reading. Burst radar will get you but I find most cops leave their radar on all the time. I always give my friend a hard time, because my detector always goes off at Starbucks or Tim hortons. If you buy a radar detector it will pay for itself. |
I have always used the Escort/Passport brand. I ended up getting a great deal on my current Passport on CL. I thought about trying a V1, but i'm so used to the Passports noises i decided to stick with it. Honestly the best part is it can display your speed. Since it is already in my field of view, I almost never have to look at the gauges to know my actual speed.

I use an Escort 9500ix and the Escort app on my phone. Completely eliminated any K or KA band tickets. Only effective thing for laser is a set of blinders (jammers) and even then are only effective on certain models of lasers. It is a constant cat & mouse battle between the laser manufacturers and the jammer manufacturers. For passive laser resistance you can use the Veil laser coating on your headlights and shiny surfaces.

For the people that use radar detectors still, how many false alerts are you seeing from all these new cars with the radar assisted cruise control?

All depends on where you live I think, I get false from new merc, bmw ect. Mainly from the blind spot detection. I was in Vancouver the other week And it was going off a lot, but I don't speed in new places too busy trying to figure out how to get somewhere |

However if new cars are transmitting in the police radar bands then that pretty much opens the door to Jammers that transmit their own signals just like the radar cruise and blind spot sensors. |

I've been under the impression since police radars went to laser, radar detectors are worthless?
Anyways, about the heads up display. I'm getting this as I dislike how Porsche put the digi speedo on my car to the far left gauge and at the bottom of it. I like to keep my eyes on the road. |

This. If you got a "save" its probably because someone was too lazy to use the hold button or was doing paperwork and let the radar run to get people with detectors to slow down I can sit somewhere and hit your car with a radar signal and get a reading before you can even hit the brakes because your radar detector went off. Then I can listen to my radar sound drop as you desperately try to slow down. With laser I've had people say their alarm went off and I already had two separate readings. My favorite is to pull up next to someone in traffic, see they have a radar detector and turn on my radar. Their hysterical paranoia is awesome. Bottom line best way to avoid a ticket if you get stopped is be honest. You may still get one but chances are you will get a break on the fine or points or you may just get a warning. People who have no clue why I'm stopping them get tickets. Be honest about the reason for the stop and your speed when asked. Don't play the cop for a fool. |

If I get a ticket now I just chalk it up to my annual tax :) |

For those on the fence, the V1 can be hard-wired into the dome light. There's DIY on Renntech I think. No need to mess the cigarette lighter. Also with the tiny remote display box, placed under the speedo, you can avoid all the blinking in cabin that attract tail-gaters or smokeys. p.s. As for the "need" for a radar detector, I've been pulled over more times in the Boxster than all previous cars combined. Ironic in that I drive within 10 miles of the speed limit for the most part. These cars have a knack of attracting their own small town police escorts. I avoid local roads in small towns like the plague. Big city cops could care less what you're driving or how fast. State troopers different story. |

Might be something to do with it being red, that stands out long before they can identify it as a Porsche.
