Short shifter play

The stock shifter in my 2000 base had a lot of slop to it so I replaced it with one of the ebay short shifters. I love the shifting feel now but I still have some side to side play in the lever, both in gear and in neutral. The amount of play is unchanged from the stock shifter to the short shifter. Is there anything else to look at to eliminate that or is this a "yes, they all do that, sir" thing? I did not replace the cable ends when changing the shifter. Thanks.
