I put a Kenwood DD unit in my Boxster. But I would swap it out for this one just to get back to an OEM look. It appears that it will support Bluetooth and I am guessing other options too. However, it may be a tad too pricey.

for a cheap looking peace of crap like that. No way. Also it doesn't have a MOST bus, which wouldd be important for poeple with a CDR23 equivalent unit.

I wish someone made a newer/larger/brighter single-DIN GPS screen (preferably with satellite radio).

Those Beckers look good, but I wish the screen were a bit larger like this:

I like it. It would be a good option for those that ditched the OEM system and want a single DIN solution. Not for that price, though

For a forum for 986, MOST is only applicable to 2003-4 cars.

The Beckers shown are nice but not AFAIK sold in USA (with tuners for USA stations spacing, that is) http://www.beckerautosound.com/

In USA we also have Sirius Satellite, which would be cool to have in a unit like this.

I am already mad enough about porsche putting too many screens in the new cars.... Now they're retrofitting them to the old cars! (Not gonna lie in getting tired of u turns and pulling off to look at maps)

That's like the worst place for a nav system. Look up, look down, look up, look down. loo down, oops you missed the exit.

And for GPS, who doesn't simply use their smartphone mounted to the windshield these days? Eyes stay on the road, no looking down.

I can't believe Porsche went to the trouble of embedding the Nav system into the gauges for the newer cars.

I know it looks terrible. Particularly when the car is off. The boxster and 911 of our style is by no means known for its interior, but I still love the way the gauges look illuminated at night, both the silver trim white dials and the black base ones. I couldn't imagine sitting in a porsche and seeing a black screen in one of the dials. I personally really like the 918s gauge style, lots of info but keeps the sat nav off to the side.

Let's face it. The snot nosed punk kid at the gas station food mart doesn't know directions anymore. We're on our own. No more asking for directions, and updated paper maps haven't been produced for 10-15 years now.

Jake.....have you seen or held a paper map??

What's a map?

I run my iPhone through USB to the 6 disc input on my stereo then use the gps on the phone, the voice comes right through the speakers.

Visibility is less a problem when the NAV talks to you. This screen is as big as an iPhone, which pleases many. Satellite radio is the decider for me.

This has inspired me.
I may buy an old older android phone and integrate it somehow into the car in a more permanent fashion for GPS, music, Wifi, OBDII Bluetooth reader, etc

I've always liked the iPad install, but it's too big for my taste. It's also a huge target for thieves.
I think a small phone would be perfect and I'm thinking about integrating it into one of the visors, maybe? We will see.

I kind of like the rear view mirror idea with built in Android, GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi, backup cam, etc. I'm just concerned about weight and looks.

While I like your idea, P-Wave....I'm not sure I want to be looking in my rearview mirror for my map!

For some reason I have an aversion to window-mounted units/suction cups. I use an old Dell Streak 5-inch 'phablet' for GPS, using the NavFree app which includes all offline maps and eliminates any 4G/data requirements, and lets the battery last most of the day. In the event of traffic, I turn on the hotspot on my regular phone for updates/reroutes via wifi. I also use the Bluetooth occasionally for ODB info, but not regularly.

I have mine mounted in the cupholder in my '03. The positioning is pretty good, but I'd like to rig up something more permanent that attaches somewhere underneath the pod cover, near the hazard switch.

I ditched my smart phone a while ago and have reverted to a landline at home and a prepaid flip phone for emergencies on the road. Going retro-tech

I'm liking the Android idea more and more. I like that I can integrate everything into it since it's just an android device.
I already look at my rearview mirror fairly regularly and to be honest, I really don't need to look at a GPS all that often as voice commands are usually enough with a quick glance here and there.
Having it all the way up on the mirror could be inconvenient when you need to type something, though. Speech to text or one of those tiny peripheral keyboards, maybe?

Being able to integrate a dash cam DVR, music, rearview camera, OBD real-time information, etc. just seems like it would be very worthwhile.

How about a 7" Android tablet as a HUD with a small keyboard and trackball hidden or integrated somewhere? Ok, too much coffee today

I need to go build something before my head explodes.

pwave - I looked into that idea A LOT when I was trying to integrate some track tools into my car. the issues for me were external gps and video connectivity. plus the android mirror is just kind of a stick-on thing (ie, ugly).
