Swivel Universal Joint Socket to remove Water Pump and Thermostat

Hi guys,

I'm planning on replacing my water pump, thermostat, and engine mount soon. The Pelican article mentions the use of swivel u joint sockets. Do I need swivel sockets to get to certain bolts down there, or it's possible to do without them?

Also, I was looking up u joint socket sets, but couldn't find many, only found impact swivel sets.

You most definitely need something to get at the rightmost water pump bolt, I used a set of wobble extensions from harbor freight, the shortest 1/4" one was perfect and was inexpensive.

If you don't know when your motormount was last done this would be the perfect time to do that and lowering the engine down is supposed to make it a lot easier to do the WP and having the coolant hoses detached for draining makes it easier to do the mount (search for pedros garage water pump diy) Thermostat is also a good one to do at some time.

Edit: I see you are doing mount and tstat at same time already...

No need for a new set of swivel sockets, just get a universal adapter.

Sears 3/8" Universal Adapter

Garage
For the water pump a 1/4" drive with 10mm deep well socket will be your friend.

If you are replacing the motor mount at the same time you are regplacing the wp, there is no need for a universal joint. Once you lower the motor to replace the motor mount, you can get every wp bolt with a torque wrench.

Thats why the wp and motor mount replacement are so complimentary. To replace motor mount, its much easier to do so by diconnecting the two principal coolant hoses, which you will have to do if you replace the wp. And once you lower the motor the wp is a piece of cake with no need for fiddling with universal joints, etc.

Do them both atnthe same, oem motor mounts and wp are relatively cheap, so it makes sense to do them both while you are in there.
