I Picked up my 996 almost two years ago. 1999 Carrera 4, 6sp, 50k for $18000. It's everything my 986 isn't: all-wheel drive, bone stock, both my wife and the dog love it!
It sometimes seems 996/986 prices are going up!

996 getting close to 986 prices ?

My assumption is that while fairly stagnate, the Boxster has already bottomed out and people are asking for a little bit more than they did a year or two ago, while 996s are just now bottoming out.

With word of turbos, 4 cylinders, and electric drive in the future, water cooled 6 cylinder porsches are about to be the second chapter for porsche with the first pages of the third chapter already visible in the e hybrids and now turbo GTS cayanne as well as the 919, if history repeats itself porsches latest and greatest is usually off of last years race car. Notice the comparison of the 996 gt3 and gt2 with the gt1 racecar.

Of course many of these watercooled porsches were mass produced so they are are not big collectables, but the watercooled era particularly the fore runners can likely expect to stop dropping in price at the least, the 996 is essentially bottomed out or at least will be soon, so if you want one, by my inept 17 year old analysis, now would be the time to buy.a

I kind of dig the wood trim. Maybe because it's not something you see every day.

I attempt to buy Porsches on a daily basis and I think the prices have gone up on all Porsches. There's always a mark up in price when the word "Porsche" is on something. I have a theory that the aircooled bubble is sucking all the other models up with it too.

I wonder what the cost of that wood was back in the day ? Prices in my region seem to be dropping . The above mentioned car would have been around 25k two years ago .

In my neck of the woods even 2002/3 996 are now in the lower $20k range

Interesting observation. But, to answer you question, no; I think you are among the newer (and more restrained) members (posters). Most others have adapted to Jake and either find humor, reminisce about their own lost youth, or ignore it/him/me. Personally, I'm still wondering about his thread on the Boxster being the best track car. Can't think of a thread where he ever said he's been on the track or an autocross from which to develop an opinion, yet opinions are free and, from what I've learned, you can't teach a new dog anything - I've tried. Jake is quite young and I think they now learn l33t in kindergarden instead of cursive in elementary.

Did you ever read the thread about it being a track car, I simply posted a link for others to read, I have absolutely never had track experience but am looking forward to it sometime soon.

Ok -- this sounds like a question, so you want to use a "?" instead of a ",". Also, "even" would be a better choice than "ever" -- I think what you are going for is a little bit of angst and/or frustration rather than "ever" which implies something else.

"... absolutely never..." I, and many others, know what "never" means. I don't think you need to qualify never with "absolutely", but to each their own.

Darn, this topic was interesting and now it's another jake thread, let me get the popcorn. I used ever instead of even as I found even to be disrespectful. Yes I posted opinions but the point of the post the link, "not hey everyone I think the boxster is best track car look at this link that agrees."

Anyways back to your pedophiliac accusations, I mean you know what they say about men that drive convertibles .

Looks like a great car. I want a base 996 but my wife would kill me if I bought a second porsche and not a bigger house.

But all the cars still cost the same to repair... I see people;e all the time that can afford to buy these cars, but they cannot afford to own them.

Approach with great care and understand that the cars are no cheaper to own than they were when they had tens of thousands of dollars higher selling prices. Honestly, today the cars are more expensive to own then they used to be.

Go in with both eyes open; expect the worst and always be prepared for it, while hoping for the best. Low mileage doesn't help, either.

Buying a low priced 996 is a great first experience in 911 ownership. And as a Boxster owner (or previous Boxster owner) you will already know 90% of what you need to know about the car and the financial commitment to ownership.

With that being said, I am seriously thinking of selling my 996. I have nothing bad to say about the car; 996's are an incredible deal right now and you'll never find another car with that level of performance, luxury, and panache for under $20K anywhere.

But now that I own the 78 911SC, I'd rather drive that car most of the time and the 996 is gathering a lot of dust...
