Is that a wheel chock built in?

Good eye! Must have lifted the car with the floor jack and placed the ramps under the wheels, or he has another set of ramps that were under the rears and then replaced with the axle stands.

I see no way to have driven the car on to a single pair of reversed stands like that.

My son's Miata is too low in the front to get the jack under, so we lift from the side jacking point, then put ramps under the wheels just like this.

No, not at all, and actually, if you get going fast enough...

No wait, that's another picture! Yes, I just used a floor jack to lift the front of the car and stuck them under the wheels. I had to put them in backwards like that because the floor jack was in the way if I tried to put them in reversed. The wheel chock is not built in, just sitting there as an extra preventative measure. I don't think it can roll forward, but I don't want it to either!

Sulking. My parts showed up, but I had to place another NDA order with pelican to get the new cam brakes and cam chain. Should be here tomorrow afternoon. So here's another pic of the garage...

Plan for the night is to put the oil pan back on with 5900, new spark plugs and tubes on cyl 4-6. Put that side of the car back together. Put the new spring on and get everything cleaned up and ready to assemble. Still sulking so here is one last pic...

Great deal!

Latest update: New spring installed - that was a PITA to do in the car. With spring on, cylinder passed another leak down test with flying colors. Put the oil pan back on - practice making a nice bead with the 5900. Installed the oil filter and new magnetic drain plug. Replaced 4-6 spark plug tubes and spark plugs, reinstalled coil packs and buttoned up that side of the car. Reinstalled the carrier for the lifters and went through and gave the head one more good cleaning to remove old gasket/rtv. I think I have the car put back together about as far as I can go. FedEx should have my new cam brakes and chain to me today and the plan is to finish motor assembly, set timing and button everything up tonight with the possibility of starting it tomorrow! Fingers crossed!

Outstanding. Are you replacing the Variocam pads on both sides?

Not today. 1st goal is to get it running. I suspect after knowing what the worn ones look like it'll eat away at me until I do. The good news is I now have the tools and knowledge to tackle this project and it could probably be done in an evening or two or on a saturday.

Boxster project update: on the reassembly I about gave myself a heart attack. One of the last things to do was put the camshaft end covers (those little green plugs) into the motor. I'm pushing the aft (sorry, boating term) one in place and can't access it with a hammer to tap it in so I'm using my thumb and it pushes all the way through into the motor. After some extreme concern, fear and freaking out I was actually able to fish it out through the scavenger oil pump hole. That was a scary 30 minutes of my life. So after triple checking everything I'm ready to fire it up. It starts and runs really smooth for a couple of minutes. Then develops a rough idle again. But nothing like before. Not knowing how it's supposed to idle I take it up the street and the check engine light comes in. Back to the garage... Check codes, misfire in cylinder 6... Wait, I was dealing with cylinder 3. That's good. And I was getting that code before I ever started this project. Could it be something as simple as a coil pack? Odd that it would go out at the same time, but ok. So I swap #5 & #6 coils, clear the codes and try again. Check engine light back on. Now a misfire in cyl 5. I'm so happy! Found one in stock at the dealer and everything is now perfect! Drove it around for a bit and actually ran into the previous owner at a stoplight on my madien voyage. Hit the gas station first to put some fresh (non three year old) gas in. Got a compliment on a beautiful car at the gas station. Then packed for a weekend at the lake and set off on a two hour road trip with the top down.

So, sincerely, I would like to thank everyone who helped point me along the way. This was an awesome and fun project. And very rewarding!
