I dont mind it, the base will be a 4 banger, hopefully a flat 4, and the S, GTS, and possibly GT4 will have flat sixes. That isnt bad. As long as there are options, heck i would take a 981 with a 4 banger for the right price, there are always engine swaps down the road, and its still a porsche engine, the fact they are at the rind means they are still serious about it, cant be any slower than a 986 base, likely as fast as an S though.

Hard to believe that Porsche is going to develop a new flat-4 just for the Boxster. Only makes sense if there is a new entry level chassis (below the Boxster/Cayman) in the works too.

To my understanding they scrapped the entry level car. They likely did this because the reception would be better for an entry boxster rather than an all new car all together.

Porsche like other manufacturers need to meet coming fuel efficiency and emission standards and like others are downsizing and turbocharging.
