So where is the engine vin code?

Is it suppose to match the vin on the car?


Where is it?


Just wondering if my motor is the original motor or not.

To answer your second question, no, the engine number does not match the car vin number.

I got a surprise when I checked my engine number. The engine had been replaced in 2006 with an M97 engine (the car's a 2003 S). The guy I bought the car from was not aware of this (he said). So my engine has 35,000 fewer miles than the rest of the car, not a bad thing.

I did a search and found it somewhere, either here or on Google. One of the letters in my engine number indicated a remanufactured by Porsche engine. There was a thread somewhere on this forum that I started.

So if it was pulled out of another car, one cannot tell if it is the original motor from that car or not?

I think I remember reading a thread about the reman engines had blue paint markings on them somewhere

From what I understand, a while back Porsche stopped tracking engine numbers along with VIN. They now consider the engine to be a replaceable part. So, after a certain date, there is no such thing as a "numbers matching" Porsche. I think all Boxsters fall into that category.

All factory reman engines have the letters "AT" in the engine number.

The only things you can discern from the engine numbers are is it a factory reman (would have the letters "AT" in the sequence), type of engine (size), and year of manufacture. There is nothing in either the car's VIN or the engine number that link them to each other.

Luck of the draw eh, so just curious, would you likely mention this or not if you were to ever sell the car again. In some ways it can be seen as a benefit but some people will just see it as fishy.
