Benjamin, I think its a very high probability you nailed it with the thought that the metal flakes were from the previous failure because of where you found them. That's pretty darned insightful. From my limited experience of rebuilding one m96 after an IMSB failure, the path you've laid out makes excellent sense particularly as you are going in eyes wide open to the possible risks and benefits. Keep us posted!

I've heard that one should flush the oil system multiple times until there are no more metal pieces. A spin on filter with a magnet and a magnetic drain plug will help.

Even then, I'm wondering whether one should use an unsealed bearing at all. I'm not sure a sealed bearing is an option these days, but if the seals last 50,000 miles then at least the IMSB won't fail due to any shavings left in the lubrication system.

What do other people think?
