Obvious engine differences aside, to me a 993 feels more like a 996 with the correct wheel base. The car that the 996 should have continued to be when they switched to water-cooled engines, if they were going to dump the 964.
But I think the 964 should have been developed instead of going the grand touring/plusher router that began with the 993.
I haven't owned a 993 but have driven several all of which were modified and likely coloring my opinion. Even mine was modded (ECU mod, full dual outlet catless exhaust and a coil over suspension) making it a more visceral experience.

In the end for me the 964/993 are more of a true driver's cars and directly not comparable to the newer Porsche sports cars/GTs (based on having driven 986/987/996/997). I guess that is one of the reason the air cooled cars are appreciating in value.

I'm of the opinion that if Porsche had continued to make the 993 but with a water-cooled 996 engine instead, along with all other 'under the skin' 996 updates, such that you could not tell the difference from the outside, and sold these new 993's at 20K units per year, the air-cooled 993's would not be nearly as valueable today. And more so if the 'water-cooled 993' brought back the classic 911 fenders of the 964.
