Old Mercedes hubcap. Got pulled out of line because I had it stuffed in a rolling suitcase and it freaked them out. That wasn't the most embarrassing thing they pulled out of my luggage. This is a family site so my story stops at that :-)

Prototype power supply. About the size and weight of a large car battery. Had ~200 feet of thermocouple wires hanging out the side. Duct tape wrapped around to create a makeshift handle. Obviously a carry-on, and obviously before 9-11.

Caused quite a ruckus in providence the last time we flew from RI. I don't play well with TSA.

A replica pistol in my hand luggage. Aged 11. Long story, was not meant to be there, was moving back to the UK from the US and I had this starting pistol thing and my mother's plan was to ask security if there was any way we could take it back. And we all forgot we had it until the alarms went off at the x-ray machine (JFK IIRC).

This was the late 80s and the security guys basically just asked us to get rid of it and my mother found a helpful store assistant in the airport who got rid for us.

Relatively little fuss, we made our plane in plenty of time, nobody died.

Could you imagine the theatre and fuss if that happened now? Zero chance of making your plane, doubt you'd escape security that day and you'd probably be profiled and pulled out for questioning every time you went through security in the US til the end of time.

I do like going back to the US, but the Nazi attitude of the security staff and the bull**************** theatre of fake security at US airports has got to the point where it's getting bad enough I think twice about travelling in and out of the country!

my business teacher used to be general manager at shoe carnival so he would do the whole spin the wheel thing. I saw a lady trying to carry on a cello. Yes, a cello. She got it onboard and tried relentlessly to fit it into the overhead bin - which was never going to happen. Ultimately, she had to walk it back out and have it checked. Funny as ever to watch.

I managed to take a 40lb Stone Budda as carry on from the pre Tsang Yee river dam project (Spelling???) from designated flood villages.

I put it in my back pack and hauled it around the airport and on the plane as carry on.

I had enough sense not to put it in the overhead compartment and kept it on the floor.

Security was hell as they gave it the full explosive testing treatment and multiple security folks looked it and me over repeatedly.

In the end they begrudgingly let me through as it came up negative for anything harmful or useful for mass destruction, although my back may disagree as the backpack was not padded very well.

Back in the mid 80’s I was carrying a briefcase full of expensive wine from Germany back to the US. Airport Security at the x-ray machine just shook their head and asked me to open the briefcase to make sure all the corks were in the bottles and sealed… That was the “Good O’l Days”.

In the mid 90's I carried a crypto computer that had the circuit boards removed and a lead weight installed to keep it's center of gravity. When they ran my bag through the X-ray it even looked like a bomb to me. At the time they called over a couple of security guys had me open my brief case and pull it out. I used a screw drive to open it up and show them the inside. The screwdriver alone would get me cavity search now. I gave up my travel job in 2003 got tired of the lines.

In the 80's on the way back from Atlanta, I checked a garment bag that had a nice 914 seat rail in it, plus my 3 piece suit, etc.

In 2005 on the way back from Brisbane, QLD, we checked a bag with a bottle of Bundaberg Rum in it that was wrapped as a gift. The wife had just thrown it in one of her bags. We didn't declare it on the airline supplied form. In LA, the customs guy asked 3 times if we had anything to declare and since I didn't know it was there, I kept saying no. He grinned and left us go.

a propane camping stove (without the propane). my suitcase was 49.5 lbs and I did not want to pay a fee. went through TSA to new Zealand and back without a problem!
