Paid $15k for mine 1.5 years ago. Had 115k miles. Needed tires, brakes, starter. Still need IMS at next clutch. It's a sweet car.
After I drove both, I knew I needed an S and did not shop both. |
i saw an s for 12k with only 65k when looking for my car... red leather and all.. he sold it before we could even transfer the money out of our accont to make an offer.

The Rule To Remember
Perfect Lap said it Perfectly to me about a year ago when I was crying about some other costly repair.....
'there is no such thing as a good deal on a Porsche, because in the end You will pay!" the next question is was it worth it? .... definitly maybe yes |

air cooled 911's, 964 and 993's may all at some point recoupe their sticker prices (few have, particularly if you consider how expensive they were for their day). But if you do buy one of these you won't be driving it the way you will drive a Boxster/Cayman or 996/997 Carrera. The air-cooled cars have essentially become garage queens, and for good reason. The endless supply of Boxster/Cayman and '99-'14 Carreras means that you can do whatever you want when you want with these cars. Street or track, rain or shine. If your Boxster/Cayman or 996/997 is stolen and sent to Russia, you can get another one in a day if you don't care about scoring a bargain. It's like Hugh Hefner living at the Playboy Mansion vs. the guy who lives in the remote county where the best looking girl lives three hours away. Finding another beauty to spend all your money isn't so hard with the former. For me it makes driving the workhorse cars more enjoyable. Quote:

Like the saying goes, "Let the buyer beware". You cannot get a warranty on a 14 year old car so I just got'em down on price and hope for the best. I have a 99, things to look out for beyond the usual tires, brakes. Water in the brake booster on pre 2000 cars, coolant fans, the 4 spoke steering wheel tends to wear and horn starts honking randomly. I tell everyone who asks, if you are not handy and willing to work on your car yourself you better have a pile of money to pay someone and even when you fix it yourself parts can be expensive and difficult to get. I have taken to scrounging on ebay and craigslist. There are a lot of great people on these forums willing to help, they are a great resource.

I noticed when shopping for a Porsche, most owners are full of themselves and tend to over price the cars. There are really not a ton of buyers out there. If you really take a look at the cars for sale you will notice that over a period of time it is the same cars for sale! They never sell unless they are priced below everyone else or appear to be a extremely good value

^ emotional attachment. Until the numbers get them unattached. which is always the funny part to me.

Driftguy, I've dumped a lot of extra money into my 1997 to make it look much nicer and newer than any 1997 ever was:
Tail lamps, litronics, seats, 3 spoke wheel (out of 2002 boxster/carreras) 18 inch aftermarket Carrera lights Leather door panels, leather center console pieces Upgraded shift knob, stereo, cluster, cluster rings, rear speaker box Aftermarket headers and exhaust and underdrive pulley Coilovers and adjustable control arms I also have a 1 inch thick folder full of repairs I've done to the car since I've owned it in 2004... wheel bearings, coolant overflow tank, oil filler tube, sway bar bushings, drop links, control arms, water pump, engine mount, and on and on it goes... And with all these wonderful mods and repairs on the car I bet I can only get $9,500 for it here in Houston ... and that would be to that unique person who had been searching for a 97-99 model and seen a bunch of crappy ones with a nasty worn out interior and no service records. Please come back to this thread and let us know what you actually listed and sold the car for, would you? I'd be really interested. |
