Boxster S badged with "Cayman S" on back
Hello,
I'm new to this forum and just recently bought my first Boxster (2001 Boxster S). It looks good, came with hardtop and fairly low miles. One thing odd about it though is the back says "Cayman S" rather than Boxster S. Does anyone have a clue why someone would put this on the car? I'm trying to figure out if there's a logical reason other just someone's personal preference before deciding to change it.
Thanks,
jpenrod

that makes no sense because its not even a 987 Boxster. A Cayman is just a variant of the 987 Boxster, it's not a totally different car. In fact Porsche doesn't even report their sales number separately they report them as one car.
But this is a 986... so my guess is that the badge was damaged. They took it to the a body shop to have it replaced and some guy ordered the wrong badge. It sounds funny but maybe even the owner didn't know what it meant. For instance you would be surprised how many people in the world don't know that a Boxster and a Carrera Cabriolet are two different cars. Which makes me think you should check to see if the rear end was repaired or repainted. Or maybe someone simply broke the old Boxster badge while drying the car after washing it.

Maybe it is the Zeintop hardtop, I have seen a few photos of those badged with Cayman S.
OP: is it a hatchback type of hardtop? Or do you have just a regular type of trunk?

I'm pretty sure there weren't accidents on this vehicle. It looks like someone took off the "Boxster" portion and put on "Cayman". I can see a slight difference in the finish on the "S". I'll post some pics of it when I get a chance.
Yes, the hardtop is removable with a gray soft top but it doesn't look like the soft top was used all that much.

Someone was just being cute. If you wanted to be really cute, pry off the Cay S and glue on a GT3 RSR instead. That might be going too deep into poseur territory though.

Maybe the trunk lid was damaged and they got a used one from a Cayman?

Maybe the PO just thought the name "Boxster" was stupid. Hard to imagine, I know, but it is possible....
