Would you buy newer Boxster..
I recently bought my 01 S after a long search for a 00 -02 S. I preferred the simple lines of 00-02 although my second choice would have been a special edition 04 if available.
I was lucky enough to find one with the options I really wanted ... PMS, Sport Package & the rare Sport Design Wheels! I could have easily afforded the 987 (05-09) but they were not even on my radar as there is something satisfying in owning the Mk1 of the S! I drove the new Boxster S just recently ... amazing! The SE has been a great car! Not worth the extra $10k+ to go 987 for small details.
I'll stay 986 for a while. |
I am working on it. Keeping my eyes open for 09, low miles, and clean. May wait a year or so but if the right one comes along ...

Absolutely I would. I have not tried anything newer than my 2001 Box base but would certainly go for a Cayman. However I am well aware that the Cayman I would be buying would be out of warranty and I would be buying a Cayman that the previous owner sold because it was out of warranty. I am afraid to try one right now as I might be smitten but will wait till spring to get smitten. I would certainly miss my 2001 Box but I could easily get used to a newer vehicle.
I am well aware that I would now be into a Cayman for $30k+ without a warranty. Would get a Cayman S if the price was right. However I am still dazzled by the performance of the Boxster base. I know what I have got, getting the bugs ironed out etc.:) |

Possibly, but in all honesty I already have the go ahead form my wife to buy a 911 (my choice of year/type) after we get a house next year (hopefully). I already know I'll be spending 20~30K for an out of warenty vehicle. So, the warrenty isn't an issue for me. I'll just plan on doing the work myself. To be honest, it's easier to work on the older models than the newer models.
That not to say I'd turn down a Caymen S though. I also might sell (or give to my daughter for collage) by base Boxster and buy an S model. The plan is to always have one vehcile to drive while I work on the other (making it the vehicle I want it to be). |

I enjoyed my 986S. Daily driver for me for 6 years and 60K miles. I too can afford to drive pretty much any car on the road, and chose the 986S. :)
I was never taken by the 987. It's a good car, but I didn't "have to have it". The new 981 however, is completely different. It is an amazing car. Completely blew me away. I got distracted on my way to buying one (with an "older" 993), but I will definitely own one (someday). BTW - Nice car in the OP. But de-amber that thing!!! / |

981 S is a great car, as is the Spyder. Otherwise, I'm not such a fan of the 987.
My 986 will be mine as long as I own a garage to keep it in. |
The 987 doesn't appeal to me, but the 981 does. I'm already stuffing my piggybank for one of those bad boys!

What do you all have against the 987? Understandable if it has the ims and "have to split the case to get at it ". You mean how it drives, looks? Does the older Cayman not turn your crank either?

Personally, I'm tired of the IMS issue. I was looking at the '09 987's and liked them well enough but the 981 looks tighter to me.

Yes; always. Started with a 2006 987 (in 2006). Went to a 2009 997.2S (in 2009). Then went to the 2013 981 (in 2013). Aside from maintenance, I had a tail light bulb burn out in the 987. Had my share of check engine lights, and minor recalls, and 1 bum battery (dealer-replaced free of charge; car out of warranty) with the 997.2S, and (so far) no problems with the 981. I used both the 987 and 997.2 as dailys (with winter tires in winter). I had around 25,000 miles in the 987 over 3+ years, ~28,000 miles in the 997.2S in ~4 years, and recently cracked 1k miles in the 981 over ~7 months (ok, the little metal piece for the iPod plug-in fell back behind the plastic, but was fixed before going 2 miles in the courtesy drive to work).
In buying new, I've either bought well-built cars, drove cars appropriately, or been lucky (or combination). |
