Would you buy newer Boxster..
I recently bought my 01 S after a long search for a 00 -02 S. I preferred the simple lines of 00-02 although my second choice would have been a special edition 04 if available.
I was lucky enough to find one with the options I really wanted ... PMS, Sport Package & the rare Sport Design Wheels! I could have easily afforded the 987 (05-09) but they were not even on my radar as there is something satisfying in owning the Mk1 of the S! I drove the new Boxster S just recently ... amazing! But I still like the 986!! :) Would you buy newer if you could? Porsche Boxster S - meet the ancestors - Autocar.co.uk - YouTubehttp://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1380424843.jpg |
The SE has been a great car! Not worth the extra $10k+ to go 987 for small details.
I'll stay 986 for a while. |
I am working on it. Keeping my eyes open for 09, low miles, and clean. May wait a year or so but if the right one comes along ...
|
Absolutely I would. I have not tried anything newer than my 2001 Box base but would certainly go for a Cayman. However I am well aware that the Cayman I would be buying would be out of warranty and I would be buying a Cayman that the previous owner sold because it was out of warranty. I am afraid to try one right now as I might be smitten but will wait till spring to get smitten. I would certainly miss my 2001 Box but I could easily get used to a newer vehicle.
I am well aware that I would now be into a Cayman for $30k+ without a warranty. Would get a Cayman S if the price was right. However I am still dazzled by the performance of the Boxster base. I know what I have got, getting the bugs ironed out etc.:) |
Would that aid in finding the answer to your question?!
http://www.icarreview.com/wp-content...r-1024x682.jpg Unlike yourself, I can't afford 'toys' like those :( Without predicted domestic violence coming from the wife anyway. That situation makes me feel very fortunate to already own a cool little 986. Very nice car you got there by the way |
Possibly, but in all honesty I already have the go ahead form my wife to buy a 911 (my choice of year/type) after we get a house next year (hopefully). I already know I'll be spending 20~30K for an out of warenty vehicle. So, the warrenty isn't an issue for me. I'll just plan on doing the work myself. To be honest, it's easier to work on the older models than the newer models.
That not to say I'd turn down a Caymen S though. I also might sell (or give to my daughter for collage) by base Boxster and buy an S model. The plan is to always have one vehcile to drive while I work on the other (making it the vehicle I want it to be). |

You'll get to drive it during weekdays only.... which is not that bad. |

The real question will be, will I really be able to keep both cars or will she nick the Boxster. Might not be so bad if she did because then I could get a Boxster S! :) |
I enjoyed my 986S. Daily driver for me for 6 years and 60K miles. I too can afford to drive pretty much any car on the road, and chose the 986S. :)
I was never taken by the 987. It's a good car, but I didn't "have to have it". The new 981 however, is completely different. It is an amazing car. Completely blew me away. I got distracted on my way to buying one (with an "older" 993), but I will definitely own one (someday). BTW - Nice car in the OP. But de-amber that thing!!! / |
987, no
981' yes! I already have a bank account open just for it. I should be ready for spring :) Chris |
981 S is a great car, as is the Spyder. Otherwise, I'm not such a fan of the 987.
My 986 will be mine as long as I own a garage to keep it in. |
The 987 doesn't appeal to me, but the 981 does. I'm already stuffing my piggybank for one of those bad boys!
|
What do you all have against the 987? Understandable if it has the ims and "have to split the case to get at it ". You mean how it drives, looks? Does the older Cayman not turn your crank either?

I would not. You already have the original, mark 1 boxster. In time it will prove to be the lasting design.
There are so many other models and brands to get into. I'm thinking about a Volvo P1800 or Ferrari 308 as my next useless addition. |
Personally, I'm tired of the IMS issue. I was looking at the '09 987's and liked them well enough but the 981 looks tighter to me.

Yes; always. Started with a 2006 987 (in 2006). Went to a 2009 997.2S (in 2009). Then went to the 2013 981 (in 2013). Aside from maintenance, I had a tail light bulb burn out in the 987. Had my share of check engine lights, and minor recalls, and 1 bum battery (dealer-replaced free of charge; car out of warranty) with the 997.2S, and (so far) no problems with the 981. I used both the 987 and 997.2 as dailys (with winter tires in winter). I had around 25,000 miles in the 987 over 3+ years, ~28,000 miles in the 997.2S in ~4 years, and recently cracked 1k miles in the 981 over ~7 months (ok, the little metal piece for the iPod plug-in fell back behind the plastic, but was fixed before going 2 miles in the courtesy drive to work).
In buying new, I've either bought well-built cars, drove cars appropriately, or been lucky (or combination). |

I have absolutely nothing against the 987. I simply didn't have to have it. There is something about the 981 that is special. It's just in a different league. I connected with it instantly in a way I never did with the 987. Drive both, you may have a completely different experience. / |
I would say yes. Especially coming from a 01. There are so much things that are nicer on the newer models. I know I can't buy a new car every year but I looked into buying a 986. Test drove a couple and bought a 987s! The S may of made the difference but to me they just keep getting better.

There a few reasons not to buy a first gen boxster but the IMS is not one of them. Removing the IMS completely from the engine is still an experiment that has yet to be proven as a wise one as most of the DFI engines are all still low mileage. I will be following these closely myself as I would buy a Boxster Spyder or perhaps an RS version of the 981S. But a Stingray seems compelling to me as well. Especially one in a carbon wrap and gun metal wheels with a Hennessey performance package. Thats Ferrari or GT3 performance for the price of a we'll optioned 981S. |

My answer is no, I would not purchase a newer boxster. I love my 2000 base. If I were going to spend 75-80K on a car it would either be a new C7 stingray corvette (460 BHP mind you) or add another 10K and grab a 2003-4 F360. The financial to fun factor of a newer boxster does not balance out in my opinion.
|
My first car was a convertible. It is cool but it is limited and another maintenance issue, so no, not a new Boxster. I think the 987 has the look that should have been the 986, especially the front lights. Now it sounds like I don't like my 986 S, not so. I absolutely look for any opportunity to drive it and get the grin. It is my daily driver. It is the best part of my working day. It is all that I could afford. What I would like to do depending on finances, is buy a 09+ Cayman S in 3-4 years while still keeping the 986 S. Now that would be the ticket
Oh and 'Flat64Ever' we have cousins 1 year apart - form the color to the wheels. I like the look |
Not me...
I went from an '07 Cayman to my '01 Boxster S, and I enjoy it just as much! |

Also, my friend includes his previous 996 base and a 993 in preferring the Boxster S most of all. He says if the GT3 were at least a three season car it would probably be the top one for him. Quote:

I think of it like this.......... I purchased my 1998 986 for $10,500 I recently purchased a sweet 1994 Corvette (my Son's first car) for $7500 I Have a sweet custom Harley Davidson that is worth $11,000 All this only comes up to $29,000. That is a lot of versatile fun factor for MUCH less than 1 new Boxster. I can even throw in my bass boat ($12,000) and 4 wheelers ($10,000) and still not come up to the price of a new Boxster. It's not that I can't afford a new Boxster but for me the cost verses fun factor just doesn't add up. Everyone has different wants and desires. That is what makes us all unique and makes the world an interesting diverse place. Ultimately, a person will have to decide their own cost verses fun to decide if it is worth the purchase price of a newer Boxster. |
Early 986s are by far my favourite Boxsters, the one exception being the 987 Spyder.
But really, if I had the budget for a much newer Boxster, I'd sooner have a Cayman or a 993. |
I have never liked the look of the rear of the Cayman until the 991 came out. Just bought a second 986 though (2002 S), so it will be a few years before thinking about another one. When I do add to the collection, it will either be a 991 Boxster S or a 997 C4S, Turbo, or GT3.

First of all, I LOVED the Cayman! It was an Arctic Silver ’07 2.7l w/ Sport Chrono. Just like I wanted it, lightweight, not many options, 17” wheels and a five speed. (Most likely the best shifting tranny I’ve ever felt, like a rifle-bolt!) Very pure. We used it as a weekend toy only. That said, the only thing we did not like was the fixed roof... When we started looking for another Porsche, we drove several 911 cabs, a Turbo and a beautiful ’09 Boxster S. Liked them all, but didn’t really fall in love… I wanted a first-gen Boxster. I love mid-engine cars, (my first sports car was a FIAT X 1/9...), and when Porsche announced the boxster in the early 90's I was smitten! It was so true to the show car, I always thought I would own one... Looked at a lot of junk, then found this cherry, one-owner '01 Boxster S. It was perfect! Can't go wrong with a Cayman. The 2.7 is perfectly balanced, very quick with NO bad habits. Looks like a million bucks, build quality is second to none. And try that five-speed. It's a beautiful transmission...http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1380566038.jpg |

In terms of desireability, I am going BACKWARD and buying older Porsche models rather than newer models (recently bought a 944, looking around at old 70's 911's now). To me, the older models represent a clearer vision of what a Porsche should be. My '99 996 Carrera might be the newest Porsche that I ever own. :) |

Wow! Am I the only one who likes the 987 headlights and side vents? They are gorgeous to me. Better than the 986 and Spyder side vents. Those are the only two things exterior wise I didn't like about the 986. As far as the interior, I can go on and on. The interior of the 987.2 took it to another level also. They started listening to somebody I guess. I like the raw interiors of the first modesl but for the price your paying, might as well get your money worth for your coin.

I agree with you on the new 981 interior.
I hope to keep my S until it hits collector status for insurance ( 25 years old) ... My original post had a video link to the Mk1 ... it may have been hard to see in the post. Check it out. Cheers, Brian |
