Basic service needs help please
Hi guys
I just want to do a standard oil change & filter etc
I have a 1998 black box just want to know what the best oil for them are and what oil filters are the best? And any other tips will be much appreciated!

Regarding oil choices, do a SEARCH...there's VOLUMES of information, or maybe more accurately opinions on the subject.

Mine just got some Castrol Edge 0W40 which is Porsche approved and recommended by a Porsche indy specialist

I just posted a "joke" thread on this to stir up the natives...that questions gets asked a lot on here.
My mechanic just did mine when he changed out my IMS bearing and put in Motul 8100 X-Cess 5W/40 Synthetic (Porsche approved list*). It is supposed to be high in ZDDP which is great for our cars. Not sure how much it costs (it was part of my total bill, but did discuss a normal oil change with him is about $175 with labor and filters and oil) but our cars get like 9 quarts of oil so remember that....

I stick to what the previous owner used - namely Mobil 1 Synthetic oil. I think it is 0w40. I use Hengst oil filters ordered from Pelican Parts. I don't like making changes from OEM but I do my own oil changes and save big $$$. Yes if you don't have it would suggest you get Wayne's 101 Projects for the Boxster at Pelican Parts - $30.
Pays for itself in no time if you do just the basics like oil and filter changes...

If im not mistaken, on my first Box - this was the same oil I used when I did my own oil changes as well.

I gotta say I'm really getting sick of these noobs coming in here asking questions that have already been covered ten thousand fkn times because they are just too goddamn lazy to do a search and get their own info, and then copping an attitude when they aren't immediately handed everything they want on a platter. I noticed porsche enthusiasts are the most sensitive when it comes to recommendation for maintenance or repair. Don't think too hard, guys!
Get 5w40 or 0w40 synthetic from any reputable brand. You don't have to use Mobile 1

My 2 cents...it more important to change oil frequently - every 5K or year whichever comes first - than to use the "perfect" oil and filter.

I'm not being a jerk and this is a serious question, is this the first forum you are registered to? If it is I can understand not being familiar with doing common searches.
If its not your answer above should have been considered a bit more before hitting the send button.
Now that Boxsters and 996's have come down in price significantly, it seems of late that we are getting a ton of threads that duplicate information asked the week before.
When you do a search, this type of duplication ends up 'spamming' the search results with nearly identical threads. In order to combat this, many forums put limits on new members ability to post new threads instead they are only allowed to contribute to exisiting ones. Thus they are forced to either do a search or attempt to hi-jack another thread.

I am all for helping out new folks, or anyone for that matter, with a valid question after doing a bit of looking about themselves, or at least checking to see if their question has been asked and answered before, and I have hundreds of posts on this forum doing exactly that. but I have no patience for these self-entitled semi-literate idiots that can't even be bothered to lift a finger to help themselves before posting their stupid question.

I second this thought. In all honesty, I've been an Internet forum member since ... darn way too long ... and there are always new users to a forum - any forum - that repeat the same response pattern. Instead of looking at the stickies - if there are any with basic forum rules, etiquette, etc. - or using search will just post a message and expect instant gratification. Most don't even bother with a Google search either.
The only time this behavior is understandable is when the forum in question is the very first forum the user has ever used. After that - having had a basic response to use search or been flamed - they should know better.
But let's get real ... you know it, I know it, and most likely they know it too that their behavior is wrong but they are still going to do it. So if you want to stop the noob behavior there is only one way to do it. Just ignore their post and move on. Empty threads are a simple way to tell a user no one is interested or willing to respond to that particular question and maybe that will generate a user response to read a bit before their next post.
PS: Every forum I've ever been to related to any vehicle with an engine has an oil thread(s) and similar response pattern.

^ actually flaming of "RTFM!!" and 'do a search!" is pretty tame on this forum.
Other Porsche forums go nuts when they see this sort of thing. This is without a doubt one of the more civil forums Porsche and non-Porsche. Some of the non-Porsche forums have some very colorful posters with hair-trigger tempers.
