Crankshaft failure on 2000 Boxster

Hi,

Apologies for the intrusion of this being my first post without a proper introduction. I've found the information posted here very useful and thought I'd seek your advise.

I've experienced a crankshaft failure on my 2000 Boxster. The car has 120k miles on it and according to the mechanic I hired, the entire engine needs to be replaced. I've found a shop which will let me source my own engine and will swap it for approx 2k. I have a couple of questions:

- is that a reasonable price for a swap?

There are many places where one can buy a used engine. After doing some research, I've seen a few different offerings:

- reconditioned engines
- used with < 50k miles (between 4k-6k)
- used with > 50k miles (between 2.5k-4k)

What would be a wise decision? Any arguments pro/contra a reconditioned engine?

My only suggestion is if you get a used engine, since it is out already, replace the IMSB before you put it in the car. Anything else is up to you (i.e. warrenty, engine incpection and flush, etc.).

$2K is on the higher end but not unreasonable for an engine swap. At that price, I would hope that it will include new coolant and any other incidentals.

With a "reconditioned" engine, be sure to read the fine print and know EXACTLY what new parts you are getting. Often you will find that very few parts are actually new and if its not new, its used and not worth anything more than a part that you'd get on a used engine.
