Sorry, but those are just ugly and overpriced. Why do they stick out like a wart? I'm sure others like them as much as you do, but I think they are hideous :barf:

ekam 08-18-2013 07:57 AM

Even the ricer in me says no...

Yea, even as a ricer, I can't agree to that.

Sorry but that looks wrong and way overpriced. It may be OK if it's for a deep dish wheel with the lug bolt holes covered up so it would look somewhat legit. I guess we all want what we don't have... Madmods, you are certainly living up to your name lol, just kidding. IMO, many Porsche guys likely think "Less is More" when it comes to modding a P-Car, especially when the mod does not enhance performance or ease of use. Then there are guys like JD that occasionally want to succumb to pressure sensitive temptations, thankfully I talked him out of the fender portholes .

It's your car, do to it what you want. Just don't be too concerned about the approval of others.

For the record, I personally think the fake centers are hideous.

I've seen the black center cap on a Panamera's black wheel and I really went 'wow'. It is just so much more pleasant visually. and YES I do have good taste.... I just didn't know it was called a Ricer :(

Who cares what anyone else thinks? Do what makes you happy.

If painting flames on the front of your car gets you hard, get that thing in the paint shop and don't look back.

You'd never go broke underestimating the taste of some car owners.

I think the center caps would look better on something more convex.

You must admit JD was provoked so lean back and enjoy it.

The irony of this is that Porsche's center locking wheels have been widely panned as an unnecessarily expensive and cumbersome invention. They require a maintenance schedule that is ridiculous and have left some track guys up in the trees from wheels falling off. Removing them requires special tools and procedures for exactly what benefit no one knows. Some even go through the huge expense of converting their $100K cars back to the old five lug.

So to accuse this $300 mod of being unnecessary is funny. I appreciate the handywork by this Asian factory to make a good looking block of industrial design. But at the end of the day if you run into a performance driving-oriented onlooker, it's a bit of belts and suspenders situation.
You'd have to figure out a way of masking the lug holes completely, which I'm fairly certain I've seeen. The whole lug area was cap mated to the CL center cap. Kind of cool I thought.

Porsche did a center lock recall after a few incidents of wheels coming off on the street and at the track including the ring.

Yes you do need a special big-ass wrench and it has to be perfectly torqued otherwise the wheel might come off.

All just for saving a few pounds of unsprung weight (and to restrict you to do any DIY).

But same thing can be said for PCCB... track guys all convert them back to steel rotors and pads.

Here's a satellite image of how they're made.

cardiffgiant 08-19-2013 08:46 AM

That picture is from the beginning of the process and really understates the skill and precision that's involved in shaping these beautiful center caps after the metal is digested...

They're there just for marketing , a cool race car part for the "race" GT3. Their only purpose is for quick wheel changes.

ekam 08-19-2013 10:29 AM

Well center lock has been around in race cars for years. It's quick provided if you have your own pit crew in your garage.

RandallNeighbour 08-19-2013 10:51 AM

I had to lay off my pit crew just last month due to budget constraints. I guess I'll cancel my order for my 2013 GT3 too :( <--- dreaming, of course
