My '97 with 103K mi had the original cap AND had previously (to me) had the water pump and tank replaced. In addition, my mechanic looked everything over and did not mention it first...point being not "everyone" shares the concern with using the original cap. I agree with the logic to replace it and requested that my mechanic change it at the last oil change.

New version of the cap at 73,000 kms, along with preventative maintenance: water pump, thermostat and coolant tank (among a dozen other things.)

And replace your gas cap too. I think it got rid of a CEL that kept coming up.

Just had a slight trail of coolant when pulling into the garage, condensation at the trunk, and I noticed the past 1-2 years, I was topping off with distilled water (not much, less than 1/2 cup).

Ordering from Suncoast right now...you guys rock!

Started getting condensation in the trunk and replaced the original cap on my 2004S with 16,000 miles. Trunk is now free of condensation.

On my second 04 version coolant cap. Caps seemed fine, just replaced them hoping to eliminate condensation.
Have always had condensation. No loss of coolant or overheating, except when water pump fails.
And I'm on my fourth water pump. Worn impellers each time.
100,000 mi 2000 base.

Yikes! 4 water pumps in 100k miles? How did you know water pump failed each time, did you wait for it to overheat, or trail of coolant leaking under the car?

I am on my original water pump with 80k miles, 02 base.

Thanks.

Glad this thread was refreshed - after putting down my beverage I took a stroll out to the garage and noticed that my cap was an .01 part number. For a minute I was impressed that I have 88K miles on my '98 Boxster and I'm still on the original cap...then I started to recall that there was some work done on the system by the previous owner....

So that got me looking through the maintenance records I received with the car. Sure enough - in 2005 with 36K miles the reservoir was replaced and a new cap was included.

What I find odd is the service record has the new cap as having the part number of .04....and I somehow have a cap with an .01 part number?? Did they have the .04 cap in 2005?

Regardless - even if the cap was replaced a 2nd time with an original .01 part number cap...I will now be ordering the .04 cap...

Smart. Our resident mechanic says his shop toss any that don't hold a minimum presure of 18 PSIG if I recall. Seems to me that if you flush as a DIY without vac fill and have a cap not holding enough pressure you'll like split the original coolant tank via trapped air or worse you'll bake up a fresh batch of hot pockets and burn your tongue.
