What can I do with the storage spaces under my radio?
Hello All-
I purchased my '97 Boxtser with only 60,000 miles about a month ago and have done a bit of work since I got it (new tires, new front brakes, chrome sill plates, spider decals along each side and a new stereo). I would love to see what some of you have done with the 2 empty storage spaces under the single din stereo. I was thinking of cup holders, or mounting a GPS, or anything that would look good and be functional to fill up that area. I'm not looking to relocate my climate controls and/or stereo, just something relatively easy that could spruce up the look of that space. Thanks in advance! |
Just leave it. Less is better in a car like this.
You will only de-value your car. put your wallet in it and or your phone. Just drive it and appreciate it for what it is. |
There is a GT3 console delete part that lets you remove the bins and gives big guys like me knee room. It's an ideal place to mount a GPS.
|
|
you could install a oil pressure and oil temp combo there (2 separate instruments side by side)
|
I have the cupholders and CD trays that I don't use. I want to swap them out for storage or something cosmetic. willing to trade
|
Thanks for all the ideas...
Tmbcn3, I would be interested in the cup holders. How can we talk about it? |
I'm interested in un-deleting mine if anybody is looking to get rid of those pieces.
Eventually, I'd like to move the climate control down. |
Subwoofer!
Mine's covered with a piece of real leather now, but this is the original finished picture with vinyl: here |

I don't think I have the capability of generating the needed 1.21 jigawatts of power to run that thing!
|
that's why you have the other compartment.
so you could fit the micro static mini nuclear plant. |
Mr. Fusion is more economical and environmentally friendly.

So I've been thinking about solving my own problem... 10 days of tinkering and researching and, in my humble opinion, I came up with a cool idea!!!
Yes I love my car, but now I feel like the technology is a bit more "updated". I love the way it makes the interior feel and the fit is perfect. I did have to do some research and just a bit of fabrication to make it happen. If anyone is interested in what I did, just let me know. |
Looks great!
next step is hard wiring it in so that you dont have to use the cigerette lighter! |
agreed... thanks
|
Looks great...what part of NJ are you from?
|
South Jersey... Cherry Hill
You? |
I replaced the bins with the GT3 delete as I needed more knee room. No regrets. :D
|
Nice!
At 5'8" I don't have that particular issue:) |
Morristown....northern Jersey.
|
Know it well... Nice town
|
Izman, I'm actually from Moorestown - right next door. Congrats on the new ride, I'm sure I'll see you out on the road!
|
Let me know if your ever in the area....
|
BD- Sure will
Tieniber- I'm sure we'll spot each other... Since I'm new to the world of Boxster, are there any events you go to or anything you do with your Box down our way? |
I haven't done too much in terms of events, but there's an annual Porsche-only swap meet in Hershey that's actually this Saturday. I've been meaning to make it out there for a few years now: link
|
Sounds good and may be a plan. Let me know if you're headed up and we can hook up.

BTW, this is what I look like. Send a pic of your car.

Mine has Double DIN, and storage area underneath with USB hook up and Ipod connection, it where the Driving library of music resides.
|
I just moved the units around to make the space more versatile.

I used mine to mount my Garmin GPS....
Here's a short summary of what I did.... -take the Garmin suction cup mount and cut the arm off the base on an angle -file it flat -using a dab of crazy glue glue it to the center of the inner top of the tray in the desired position -drill two small pilot holes via the top of the box and using two small screws secure the base arm to the case (the crazy glue should hold during this process) -drill a 1" hole into the back of the case for the USB power mount (any electronic store carries these... I got mine for $5.99 at CDN Tire) *The pictures will help explain.... The nice thing is you can use the USB jack for charging a phone/GPS etc and you can undo the GPS/Mounting clip leaving nothing visible in your car to the normal person. If you need more information just send me a message :D Heiko This shows the screws through the top holding the mount arm http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1366297857.jpg This shows the box with mount and USB jack in place http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1366297869.jpg This shows the back of the box with USB jack in place and wiring prep'd http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1366297878.jpg Shows GPS mounted http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1366297886.jpg Shows GPS install complete in dash http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1366297898.jpg |
Here is my ride waiting to go with a JVC KW-NT3HDT 2-Din w/ NAV, (has memory stic that holds like 9 days of music or DVDs), Backup Camera-Smile!, Amp in frunk, 6" Subs in the doors, upgraded dash speakers & tweets, & a pair of 160w 5.25" 3-Way Rear-Mounted Deck Speakers. The AC unit had to be moved up one slot to accommodate the bin where I put my phone - which connects via bluetooth to the stereo...unfortunately for me I have to work.

Izman, I'll have to get a new shot once my new wheels go on today.
As for this weekend, it's my birthday and others have already planned a party for me, so no Hershey this time... I'll get out there at some point! |
Happy Birthday... Enjoy

Please Help-
So, I finally got around to hard-wiring the GPS in today and ran into a snag. I'm sure it's got something to do with the different types of electrical currents in the car, but quite frankly, I'm very amateurish at this kind of thing. Here's my issue... As you can see in the pics, the GPS was running into the cigarette light. Today I pulled the stereo out, cut the end off of the cigarette adapter and tried to connect the GPS with the acc and/or battery connection running to the stereo... No power. What is wrong... Is the type of electrical current running to the cigarette lighter different than to the stereo? What can I do? Thanks in advance. |
You could put some gauges in
|
I did the GT3 delete, then mounted my garmin in the empty space. Not as nice looking as Izmans, bu now I have the extra knee room AND the GPS in a convenient location.

12vdc is 12vdc ...
If you have power where you're tapping in , and you wire the polarity correctly , you have a bad connection at the splice or a broken piece of equipment . Quote:

Thanks, Ian...
Any tips on the polarity? |
