Americans have no incorrectly spelled words. Like dentistry and fluoridated drinking water, we have made improvements for the sake of English-speaking civil society. And we like to take words back to the original Latin... instead of keeping up the traditions of any un-invited Normans. |
Not all Americanism's were exactly improvements, there are some real humdingers out there.
Original Latin huh? Didn't the Roman invaders bring that one? |
We could get the boot and bonnet, vs. the trunk and hood thing going. :)
But that's probably been done before! |

Don't you mean, "incorrectly spelled words"? ;) So with some of the terminology differences, Amreican cars have a trunk and a hood, while British cars have a boot and a bonnet. Does the Boxster "frunk" in America translate to a "froot" in England? DBear |
'Incorrectly spelt' is correct here although 'Incorrectly spelled' is the norm in American English.
We call the roof the hood in the case of a convertible. The frunk is the still the bonnet and trunk is the boot. We have a sister company in Detroit that rebuild the engines and provide race support in Indycar. We design, develop & manufacture them in England (for Chevrolet). Anyway, we are busy teaching your fellow countrymen who work with us how to spell and speak English and have them pass it on to others. Hope to get your dictionaries corrected shortly so we are no longer divided by a common language. I fear we will have as much luck as getting you guys to put the steering wheel on the correct (right) side. |
