Whine - Best Guess As To Cause

			Hi everyone:
My 01S has a whine. It sounds like it is coming from the front of the car. It's pitch changes with RPMs even while the car is stationary. It goes off - that is the whine stops - if I push the snowflake button and turn the A/C off.

My best guess is that is might be A/C compressor noise. But I'm confused because it seemingly comes from the front of the car. I haven't removed the engine access cover to see if the noise is really coming from the back.

What would your best guess be. Most importantly, could it be noise from the serpentine belt or some other belt-drive auxiliary like water pump, etc.

Thanks

I had a whine like described above after changing out my radio. Turned out I didn't have it grounded properly. After I fixed the ground, whine went away. Now if I could just get rid of the whine from the fuel cap area, I'd be happy.

Thanks for the radio suggestion, but I've ruled it out. Whine is there whether the radio is on or off.

It seems like the noise is from the front passenger side. I thought it might be the fan. I discounted that possibility, but did not rule it out completely, because the noise stops when I turn off the A/C. I would think that the fan would still make the noise all the time it blowing

The passengerr fan come on with the air conditioner, go under your dash on the driver side and pull out the passenger side fan relay and see if it still make a noise with the air on.

Mikes boxster page has the diagram for the relay

			Johnny; ha, ha!
When whining comes from the passenger side of his Porsche, my hubby stops it by applying jewelry. When applied liberally, the whining is reduced for a long period of time, but if applied sparingly, the whining tends to come back fairly quickly.
