Why I will never buy a new Porsche
 

because there are always people like this guy....

His 997 has been driven a whopping 81 miles in six years --even with Champion forged wheels, PSS9s, B&B exhaust (well over $10K in mods) the owner is taking a 40% depreciation hit. Water-cooled Porsches are simply money pits. I wonder what 81 miles on a 964 Turbo would be worth after six years...

The owner is only discounting $13K off the $72K new retail price.

Kinda hard to blame him being that its got less miles in six years than I put on this weekend...

Although mechanically, I don't think anyone is going to be so generous giving him the benefit of the doubt. M96 engine cars that sit are not cars you want.

He's probably selling it because the fuel and fluids have turned to jelly after 6 years... :D OMG he hasnt even used 50% of the fuel in the first half of the tank!!! Scary how someone can only drive 81 miles in 6 years and leave a car like that sitting for so long... they are meant to be driven....

So they probably don't know if the fuel door works?

That is insane. I worry about putting miles on my Boxster, but then my buddy's words always hit me..."If you enjoy driving it, drive it." I've put about 8k in 17 months (mostly due to last year's winter in Chicago...there wasn't one) and I don't regret a single mile.

Apparently he drives the 997 into a transporter and takes the car to Porsche events like councours competitions. Comes home, drives it off the transporter and back into the garage.
Repeat for six years...

Man, that is actually just retarded. If you are going to treat a car as a piece of art it should at least be a pretty special piece of art. An arctic silver 997?

Words cannot express my disdain for this man.

Kind of weird. If you are rich enough to let a show car sit, why not get something more special than a 997? At least a GT3!

I'd rather drive it, but I do understand the impeccable upkeep and show car condition - that can be fun too, but only if you have other fun cars to drive.

He hasnt even empty'd a 1/2 tank of fuel... perhaps all the other fluids were changed yearly or in between shows :D
You never know why people buy or sell stuff they've hardly used... there's probably more to the story - BUT either way whoever buys it is going to get a pretty nice car. That car looks cleaner from the underside than mine is topside...

Don't see the value in spending that kind of coin to win some blue ribbons and a smattering of acrylic trophies. They must have more prestige than seen in the photos. And agree if you're going to do this, he should have chosen a more worthy version.

After completing the paperwork, the new owner should hop into it and rip off a nice patch when leaving. :eek: The old owner would just crap himself.

Yeah that's what I was thinking with going with a 964 or 993 Turbo. The rise in value would have payed for the cost of showing the car.

But if he was going to go the money losing route with a water-cooled Porsche, I kinda of think he parked the right Carrera. A standard 997 that's probably slower around the track than a Boxster Spyder wasn't a huge loss to the community as far as utility. Had he let a GT3 or GT2 go to waste well for me that would have been sad. But then again so many people put those into the wall on their own...

It's just wrong on so many levels. A 997 will never be a collector car, there were just too many of them made. He has squandered a great driving car for nothing. If he's lucky, he will take a $20k hit from the purchase price,for what? To drool over his car in the garage and at a couple of shows?

Wow you guys are being rough! This wasn't about retaining value it was about the fun he had showing a 6 year old car that stood still in time and gave him pleasure detailing it for the next show. Who knows what other cars he had along the way and did enjoy driving. It's possible $72k to him is like $720.00 to some of us. I have a close friend who has restored over 30 cars and keeps them all, I asked him if he'll auction any of them to supplement his income when he retires...nope he'll have enough already for his life style and wants to enjoy all 30+ cars until the end.

I was at a Porsche event in NC where a guy had a 944 with 600 miles, it was kewl to see what they looked like as if in show room.

If someone gets a good price on that 997 they will get a beauty. I'm sure the oil and gas were removed regularly.

OMG, this guy lives near me. I do recognize one of the photos of him and must have seen him at PCA events, but it probably wasn't at an autocross or DE event!

If it was me, I would just start driving and enjoying this beautiful car on the weekends.

As I said before, its like being married to a supermodel and never... well, you get the idea.

The dude has a long driveway and needed something to go pick up the mail and newspaper in. It was a 60 foot round trip ride every single day for six years and he cherished every mile.

It's funny how he has all of those handling modifications too!

Personally, I could not let it sit and not drive it. It's such a great car to drive. Now, if I also had another Porsche of similar or greater performance - then I could see doing this, but otherwise, not sure.

Maybe someone knows more background on this story, before we all go crazy with these theories and scenarios, ha.

But still, a very neat story and definitely kind of cool it has such low mileage and good condition - I just feel the better value of these cars is in the driving. (And everyone, well, 99% of people, would agree.)

well, there were lots of p-51 mustangs and tiger tanks rolling around in the forties; so many of them that, depending on what side you were on, you never wanted so see another again in your life.

so, if you want to go with the long odds, its as good an investment as any other.

but long odds is long odds and it aint gonna pay back in our lifetimes, so if he's not willing so sit on it for 50 years then he's just a fool with too much money, and i say eat the rich.
