English newbie

Hi all, just registered on the forum and thought Id say hello! I'm not an owner yet but I am looking, my budget here in the UK is about $7200 which should get me a decent 98-99 model. I noticed the US version has horrible surrounds for the rear number plate, why is this?

hi and welcome from another UK member (and owner)..

the US spec has the 'bumperettes' as it's a legal requirement for US regulations on crash (i think it's something like no damage from a 5mph impact or some such - i'm sure a US forum member will put the facts straight)

for the equivalent of 7200 US on a UK car be very careful and be very picky...

the type of owners fall into generally one of three categories..

1. the owner who just puts it in to a main dealer every year for a service (and probably maint work when needed)

2, the owner who buys, for the badge and cant afford to do the maintenence to keep it A1.. and then sells it when everything mounts up.

3. the enthusiast who keeps on top of everything and keeps current on what needs doing.

there is no such thing as a cheap porsche. a cheap one will need money spending on it, so account for that.. one that's higher end in price tag should require very little spend..

.. of course you will get the seller that has a rotter that thinks he's sitting on gold and looks at the prices of the higher end cars puts his up for that.

i'm in the south, so if you want any help just drop me a line.

Cheers mate, thanks for the advice, as you know my budget will be about £4500 so Im under no illusions of picking up a concours example. Im in no rush and Im willing to travel for the right car. Im lucky enough to have an engineer and Porsche lover for a cousin, he's got a bigger budget than me and currently has 2 Cayennes, a 2011 911 & an 82' 911 Carrera. He's totally rebuilt the old one engine from scratch and knows what to look for so he's my wingman! Can't wait to start the hunt!
