Whats the deal with VIN plate replacement

Looking at a car with VIN plate that has been issued by DMV. I guess the original one was removed or lost. Some of the body has been modified as well. Wondering what the pitfalls of this could be. Anyone haven knowledge of this topic?

Run a CarFax on the car. In all likelihood it is a theft recovery with a branded title. It adversely effects the worth of the car. Good luck and keep us posted.

Sounds like this may be a "salvage" title car made up from parts from multiple vehicles. I would run away quickly unless you are interested in taking on the associated risks of owning one of these cars........

I have bought and sold several cars with salvage titles and its not nescessarily a deal killer. This can be a good opportunity to buy very, very low and later sell for much higher than you paid. But there is a huge risk of mis-representation, if not outright fraud, so you have to really do your homework and know what you're buying and what its going to be worth.

If this is too much risk or worry, then run away. Fast.

It is a 70s 911 with 80s body kit. And of course that vin replacement plate. I'll visit and take a look and talk to the guy as I'll be in that area anyway. Curious to learn these things. Maybe a good lesson for future who knows. Thanks

As part of your due diligence...

Contact your insurance carrier to get their input too. You might find some surprises there...

Good luck
