metal in oil filter

Today was a nice New England day so I decided to change my oil (every 3000). I got 25% off some castrol 5w40 even better. When i cut the old filter open i found about a dozen good size metal shavings not the typical micro flakes. Should I be concerned ?

Does it pick up with a magnet?
Has your IMS been updated?
Year, model, and mileage?
Reference for size (penny)?

it's not magnetic , so i assume it's aluminum . The shavings are about 1 to 2 mm in size. I have never had anything that big show up in the filter.

Jacabean,

That does not look good. I will stay tuned into this thread as I am a new Boxster owner and I am learning everyday.

This IMS & RMS crap has got me paranoid. I do not mind fixing things that wear but not spontaneously a few hundred miles from home.

BTW, I am in MA as well. Central MA to be more specific.

They look like milling debris if they are not magnetic, probably not a destructing bearing. The black plasticy thing could be a piece of the chain guide/pad.
Wouldn't hurt to drop the sump plate and check for any larger pieces, but I personally wouldn't stress about it.

i am not stressing over it . if the metal was magnetic i would . that is why i think 3000 mile oil changes are best for our cars . we can really keep an eye on what's going on in our internals. i must say i did panic a little when i first saw the shavings but after taking a closer look they are very small and few. i always see little plastic stuff and very fine metal flakes .

A few tiny aluminum flakes... normal stuff for any engine. Ignore.
