Just for Fun!
Post a picture and purchase price of the first car you ever bought with your own coin. Here's mine, a 1967 Opel Kadette, four banger 1.1 liter couldn't get out of it's own way and had nearly no heat, was a four speed though! Price? Four hundred.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1351672809.jpg

Datsun 710. Before they became Nissan and before anyone KNEW about good sound systems….I put home stereo speakers in the back seat! They took up BOTH BACK SEATS and every time I would brake hard….the speakers would hit the back of the seat!
Fortunately, the brakes were not that good. Neither was acceleration but it WAS FUN! http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1351690828.jpg |
Great first car. Cost $750. Had plastic, removable windows. No heater or defroster. Made for some interesting winter driving in New England. Oh, BTW - the floor board was just that -- plywood. And the car had a positive ground. When I added a radio, the capacitors promptly blew up because I forgot to reverse polarity. One could do that back then.

First car was a '63 Ford Fairlane that my dad bought from the old lady next door for $250. Then the parents bought me an '83 Escort new for college. Then I bought the '72 Chevelle SS for $1800. This is a stock photo but mine was nearly identical. Even had the black vinyl top. It was just a 13-14 year old car back then, nothing special or collectible. I traded it in on a mazda GLC in the 80's. Sometimes when I think about it..... I still get sick to my stomach.

1992 Ford Tempo, was $500 and got me from A to B.

1963 Chevy II White, 192ci 6cyl, three on the tree. I drove the wheels off that thing and had lots of great memories. Bought it for $300, added a stereo and decent tires and sold it after two years for $400. |

1971 Firebird Formula 455ci auto $1,000 bought when I was 17. Starter solenoid was bad so the PO showed me how to jump it by sticking screwdriver between headers, hard to do at night without making lots of sparks. Drove it that way for couple months till I learned how to replace solenoid. All pic's are pre-digital so here is original brochure, my car is middle color. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1351702725.jpg

My first
Not a picture of my actual car but it looked just as much a hooptie as this one. Bought it for $200 and my dad brought me a motor for $50, that was donated by the local FD from a car they cut up with the Jaws of Life.

Wish I had pictures. First car was a parent hand-me-down 68 Olds Cutlass Convertible. Engine went bad after 6 month. I put in a W30 442 race motor literally dragged out of a barn for $150. 400+ HP, 18 yr old teen, drinking age 18 in the late 70's. I possibly could have been the most dangerous thing on the road in NJ after 11PM on a weekend. I don't have to wonder what happen to it, I bought a Telephone pole with it. Fortunately for me it only cost a concussion for a couple of weeks and of course the car. Still like speed but cars are better and my understanding of consequences are better

Lancia beta coupe. 1.6L 1974.
was 17 when i bought it, for 4500 shekels :D (1500$ in 1988) spent more time underneath it, then in it. (obviously this is not the actual picture of my car, but same color :D) |
Too bad you didn't know me then Meir, nuttin' but a fancy Fiat, my dad could have whipped that into shape in a snap.

The first car that I bought was a brand new, off the showroom floor, 1983 Mazda RX-7. I don't have many pictures but this one was taken in Wisconsin shortly after purchase with my Golden Retriever, both long since gone:( The first car I drove, was a 1968 Firebird(automatic though) that my dad purchased. Loved that car also, amazing I am still alive after the adventures in that car. Edit: From the January 1983 Car and Driver Magazine: "The Mazda RX-7 is the car you buy when you have all the right instincts and are a person of good taste and character but you can’t afford a Porsche." That would be me:D I guess I was destined to have a Porsche someday! |

http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1351718788.jpg 1985 Chrysler Laser 2.2L turbo, 146 hp, 0-60 in 8.1 sec. The 0-50 mph times were faster then the Camero Z28, Transam, and Toyota supra of the same year. In the slalom it beat the Mustang GT and the Mazda RX7. I wish I had hung onto this one. I bought it in 1998 with 23,000 original miles for $4500. |
The first car I bought was a 1970 914 1.7l. Yellow with American Racing 4 spoke wheels. Owned it for about 14 years. Loved that car!

I see an Opel trend in this thread. Is Opel the gateway car to the Porsche?
My first car was a 73 Manta. Bad body and really ripped up interior but it cost me $300. Best deal I ever made in a car. Over 3-4 years I drove it all over the US when I used to race bicycles, the odometer was broken, but I estimate I put close to 75k miles on it with the only expense being a set of tires, a clutch and a driveshaft u-joint. And the car was fast. My little brother got arrested for going over 100 mph in it. http://www.3countiesmanta.co.uk/images/PICT2763.JPG Yikes! Sorry. How do I resize the image? |
Corvette
My first car was a 1978 Silver Anniversary Corvette... My first vehicle was a 1972 Ford pickup truck.

I was on my second motorcycle before ever getting a car. My first car was a 1963 Corvair 2 door coupe. Purchased Spring 1974 for $75.
Air cooled flat six. Ran great. Tough as nails. Go anywhere car. Put about 10,000 miles a year on it. Had it for 3 years. Total repairs were; 1 set of spark plugs $9, 1 muffler $15, 1 fan bearing $15 and 1 set of 4 new tires $125. Sold it for $200. Thinking about it, I guess that must have something to with now owning a Boxster. |
My first was a red Gremlin. 5hp single stroke if I recall. I was however 8 years old and its debatable about it being my coin. I do remember something about an allowance swap!
I drove this thing hard until I could no longer fit. It went topless within the first year and we had to weld the frame back together at least three times as the fun was had in the fields with lots of holes and rocks. (this is not my photo btw, although there might be one buried in my parents photo albums back east) http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1351746357.jpg |
the first car i purchsed with my own money was a 1991 plymouth laser ($7500). loved that car - the 3rd car i purchased was a 1992 mitsubishi eclipse. (not my pics)

1967 Pontiac Laurentian, 2-door sedan, in provincial white. 250 c.i. straight 6, o-glide tranny. Bought it in 1974 for $200. Wish I had a pic. Had a couple of significant firsts in that car.

In 1980 I had a Renault LeCar with the opening roof.
It was actually a pretty decent car, just ugly and mine was a dark brown......ugh! I even towed my Hobie Cat sailboat around with it during my racing years. Great, with lots of room for gear in the back. Only 3 lug nuts holding each wheel on. With the roof open people in the rear seat could stand up and their body from the waist up was above the roof. Got pulled over doing that once by the fuzz. The back seaters were high, and argued with the police that they had their seat belts on, while standing up in the back seats. I smacked them three stooges style and told them to sit back down and shut up so the nice officer would not take them to jail. I think he was holding back a laugh and let us go with a warning. It happened again a year later on the highway, different back seaters this time though, and they got $90 tickets. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...lt5-Le_Car.jpg My first Brand new car ($13k) was a Chrysler Laser Turbo, very cool, my first Black car too. The stlying was quite different for a car of the 85 era. I am always attracted to different as I hate having cars that look plain and boring. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...aserXE1985.jpg |

QUOTE] If we were doing the 2nd car thread I would be right there with you. My second after dumping my $200 VW project for $1400, was a '68 Firebird 400(non RAM AIR), that I picked up with a new paint job for $1800. It was also my first introduction to HORSEPOWER and street racing. Not a good combo for a high school kid:eek: |
