Boxster Speedometer Theory
Does anyone know the real reason behind why the speedometer on a base boxster only goes up to 150 mph versus 175 on the S model ?

S model has more displacement and horsepower so it can reach a higher top speed. Of course, I am sure Johnny has a secret switch to deploy a jet engine in his car, so he regularly reaches speeds 200mph+.

Because the 3.2 is a Carrera engine? Or it's the 6 speed?

Let's see….thinking deeply here:
Porsche used the same assembly on the Speedo unit and just changed the numbers on the dial so they didn't have to recalibrate….a.k.a., they cheaped out! Or was it the smart thing to do? Hmmm.

I'd suggest that its all in the marketing - a guy walks into a Porsche dealer and looks at a base model and then he looks at the S model and the much higher max speedo of the S implies that the S is MUCH faster.
IF Porsche offered a "Turbo S" Boxster, the speedo would probably be marked at 200mph regardless of whether the car could ever reach that speed.
But more likely, the answer will have something to do with a nun, a ruler, and some spanking.

I don't know stony, when it comes to top end wishful thinking I don't find Porsche to be a violator, especially when contrasted against other manufacturers. Every Porsche I owned was good for exactly what the manual said it would be good for. Check out say a Tiberon if you want to see some numbers only achievable by driving off a cliff. Lastly, even if the other cars can reach what they say, you better have St Chris on the dash as the ride will be dicey up there whereas in a Porsche you could eat a sandwich at 100 if you had to. The 944 went to 150, the manual said 143 top end I don't find that an egregious Pinocchio tale. The absolute dumbest period of my life was when the government made 80 the speedo limit, my Kawasaki pinned that somewhere between third and fourth.

The "S" will do more than 150, and the base won't?

In my ongoing effort to bring justice to the world, I extend this crucial discovery to my fellow boxster owners. The theory behind the difference in speedometer settings between boxster models has nothing to do with any kind of performance difference. Rather, those numbers 150, 175 and the subtracted difference of 25, I'm alarmed to say, referred to a series of meridian coordinates that mark the location of the next secret meeting of the Bilderberg and Illuminati Groups. Moreover, all of the questionable "destination" charges that Porsche has been charging boxster owners over the years have gone toward the construction of clandestine complex to accommodate said meeting. In fact, Jesse Ventura, along with his team of covert operatives, are believed to have already infiltrated it. And, further intelligence suggests, that Chaz Bono will be the guest speaker to talk about global change. No foolish second shooter - grassy knoll theories here !
