I'm struggling to figure out the rear O2 sensors. The pre-cat O2 sensors were no big deal; I just unbolted the mount, broke off a tab, rotated the mount back about 45 degrees, and reattached. So the pre-cat sensors are in place as before.

BUT, the 200-cell catted mid-pipes place the post-cat O2 sensor so far back that the wire for the factory rear O2 sensor is too short to reach the connector. I unbolted that connector from the block as well and I'm going to look "up top" tomorrow to see if I can loosen anything on top of the motor to get a bit more slack in the cable, but I'm thinking I need a longer O2 sensor. I'm afraid that if I hack and splice longer wires into the sensor my voltage won't be right and I'll get CEL.

What are other folks doing to accommodate post-cat O2 sensors on catted mid-pipes?

See my pair of posts here: http://986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/73010-headers-high-flow-cats.html

Works perfectly.

I'm afraid that if I splice in additional wire, the resistance won't be correct and I'll get CEL. Are there longer O2 sensors available that will connect? What are other people doing to run the post-cat O2 sensors on NA vehicles?

I've been running now two weeks and approx 900km with post CAT extensions as seen on the image with not a single CEL on NA spec 2001 Boxster 2.7.

The cable I used to make these extensions is 18 gauge or 1mm size automotive wire (RS Pro 1225866 - 1mm).

Just picked up a set of eibach lowering springs. Not sure if/when I'll install them. I just finished installing Boxster S struts and springs. I think I'll ride around this summer on those before I decide to put the lowering springs in and try them out.

jcp 04-23-2020 01:34 PM

Decided to tackle the strut replacement project today (Konis). I tried to cheep out and not replace the upper mounts. The rubber insert has cracks of course. Now I’m going to have to wait a couple of days to receive them. What everyone else says is true.....just go ahead and change every piece that has rubber, ball joints or spherical bearings in the entire suspension and be done with it.

I went ahead and learn to tune my 99' Boxster. Now she revs up to 7.2k versus 6.8k. This means more mods coming soon. I'm so excited.

I've been chipping away at some carpentry work to improve the sounds. It's a non Bose car so only had the diskettes in the dash. Decided to add 4x6 Pioneers to the rear cubby. A satisfying job. Not finished yet but getting there. Need to secure them in place and decide if I will do a fabric or metal cause for the opening.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cadcd07970.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b45f1b6966.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2b145eda27.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...71ad340736.jpg

Deleted the secondary Cats on my 2002 Boxster S. Then took her for a nice drive up and down the coast!

Omes986 04-25-2020 03:02 PM

Started to chase down the fob not working/passenger door won’t lock/alarm control module doesn’t light up/two beeps gremlin and the driver heated seat not working issues.

1. Re: the alarm control module, took out seats, replaced 15a fuse just to be safe, opened up case, both sides looks dry as a bone. Put everything back, crossed fingers, turned car back on... still not working. Will start focusing in on the passenger door latch tomorrow. Only thing that stood out as odd was the passenger pan had two ground wires, but driver only had one. Normal?

2. Re: heated seat, passenger side works, changed relays/changed switches, driver side still didn’t work. As per one of the threads, tried the continuity test, seat back showed no current (seat bottom was fine), did the short circuit/splice wire solution. Put everything back, crossed fingers, turned car back on... still not working. Unsure of next steps here (in-car fuses are fine).

0/2 today, lol.

Omes986, I covet the condition of your CLU board. Mine looks nothing like that, but still runs and drives! So it's on my list to address.

I changed out front sway bar bushings.........and broke one of bolts.......should have been a simple job..........

Aanic 04-25-2020 05:44 PM

Started the process to pull the engine for the first time. Bad intermix issues. Got the cats off and was lucky enough to find oil pouring out of the exhaust manifolds. On a car that hasn't even been turned over in 18 months.

Balloonmeister 04-28-2020 04:22 PM

Removed the front bumper and air ducts and cleaned out the condensers and radiators. Ordered grill screens to be placed on the bumper openings.
Went to reroute the emergency frunk release cable to the tow hook opening but found that cable is jammed somewhere. If I pull on the looped end it does not move freely to the latch. Will have to investigate that tomorrow. Front of car is on jack stands with e-brake on and wheel chocks in place on the rear wheels.

Installed a 997 shifter last night.

BFeller 04-29-2020 04:13 AM

This is a late post: Last Tuesday I ordered two new shocks for the rear trunk lid, and front Lower Control Arms. They all arrived on time. Of course, it all came from Pelican.

Wednesday, I suffered a stroke, being hospitalized until Friday evening. The doctor says no driving. I have already started Physical Therapy. I am looking for small daily improvements to lead to big changes.

The positive is that with one fully functioning hand and ingenuity, I was able to install the two trunk lid shocks. Small changes. I know it will be while before getting under the car for LCA install is an option.

Wow! Glad you are remaining positive. LCA can wait. How much longer before you get to drive?

I have to get Physical Therapy to approve. Thier approval will depend upon my progress in healing. Fortunately the hit was not in mental abilities. I can barely hold a fork with my left hand. I am seeing small improvments daily. Thursday I could not make the OK sign. Now I can.

Prayers and best wishes for you. Sounds like you're hanging tough and ready to get after it. Let's hope for a short term minor setback!

imhighlander 04-30-2020 09:53 AM

Ordered some bits for a busy weekend:
* Discovered cracked ignition coils when I attempted to change plugs, so new coils en route for install with new plugs
* Burned a hole in PS pressure line (contact with new header; doh!) so that's on order
* Plan to disassemble and clean intake since I need to remove left side to access PS line. "While I'm in there..." I'm installing 74mm throttle body and 997 plenum
* IPD intake hose and clamps also en route for clean install

Fingers crossed for a successful several hours in the garage this weekend.

Did your primary physician or cardiologist order a doppler test of your arteries? my father suffered a stroke and was unlucky to be taken to a second rate hospital. After discharge and nearly a month later his cardiologist found a DVT clot in his leg and immediately began blood thinners. He'd been complaining of leg pain in his calf for many months but none of the doctors I took him to raised DVT as possibility. His previous primary physician was part of doctor's group that were somehow incentivized to block authorizations to escalate to a specialist which cost us dearly. In hindsight I should have simply changed his insurance ASAP and found a new doctor. But his routine heart tests were otherwise normal. A top notch cardiologist would not have hesitated to order the doppler test and get him on a low dose thinner.

I think as a general rule once you hit 65 you should check in with your cardiologist annually. Some things just dont show up on basic tests performed by a primary physician. Good luck. You're attitude is very similar to my father's. Some people like you have that extra gear that keep the fight in the dog. My one friend half my father's age has a mental breakdown if he gets a cold.

I am sorry to hear that your father also had a stroke. I am fortunate in that I work for one of top ten health centers in the US. No matter who you are in our hospitals, if you walk in with stroke symptoms, stroke protocol is activated. A special team kicks into gear.

Wishing you a full and speedy recovery. A good friend of mine and fellow cyclist had a stroke a few years ago, made a full recovery and got back on his bike. Hope you get back to driving soon.

got to spend 200$ to get towed home after a radiator hose let go. got stoped before it overheated but was a mess. putting it on a lift in the morning to asses damage. guessing hoses are original so may do a complete refresh of the cooling system.

dghii 05-01-2020 10:28 PM

Not a 986 but on my 996, just did 4 brake hoses, 4 drop links and fuel door actuator. Brake fluid flushed as well.

Having a bunch of kids, this all made sense to me. Basically he said we need to drive our cars!

imhighlander 05-02-2020 02:52 PM

I spent a good part of the morning taking out the high pressure power steering line that I ignominiously burned on my new headers. (PSA needed, BTW.) I'll try and do a quick write-up on the process since I haven't seen much out there. For the uninitiated, it's officially a royal pain in the ass but it's manageable, even for one whose DIY skills are as dodgy as mine.

http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1588459858.jpg

After I got the hose out I replaced the plugs and ignition coils. The plugs that were in the car weren't fully perished but all but one of my coils were cracked. The new coils have a heavier insulator(?) and slightly different/longer bolts; must be an updated part. I ordered OEM Beru plugs and coils to keep things as good as original.

Fun fact: the coils for cylinder #1 (front most right side) and #4 (front most left side) are a little tricky but not too bad. There's a little plastic tray on the right side of the engine bay that makes it damn near impossible to unclip the wire from the ignition coil on #1 so I strongly encourage folks to unbolt the two 10mm bolts that hold it in place. That gives you enough slack to disconnect and then reconnect the wiring clip to the #1 coil.

imhighlander 05-02-2020 02:59 PM

Almost forgot...

Since I'm in there anyway, I ordered a 997 plenum and some new plenum boots to go with the 74mm 996 throttle body I ordered. Once the IPD intake tube arrives and I get everything back together, I'll also have a bigger intake to go with the new exhaust.

I simply can't justify the IPD plenum at (literally) 10x the cost of a 997 plenum. The 997 plenum is also 74mm to go with the beefy throttle body; it just doesn't have the sexy aluminum body and the machining inside. I'm sure IPD's stuff is crazy good and superior to a stock 997 plenum but I figure that 1) it's bigger volume than what my 3.2 came with, and 2) at 10% of the cost of an IPD plenum, the 997 unit will be "good enough."

Just dropped the Tiptronic trans in my 01 S. The Bentley manual misses a few things so just be wary when doing this yourself. The Tip is a much bigger job compared to dropping a manual.

Very nice look. I would have done that to mine if I knew how at the time. Instead I just got it painted white to match the exterior. Tried to do a couple mirror on my Motorcycle and just messed it up.

Thanks. :) I also did the e-brake handle and top trim in the carbon fiber, the dash trim strips in silver, and today the door pull sections along the storage bin in silver.

Thanks. :) It’s been a learning curve getting the vinyl flat and adhered properly to contours and panel corners. I’m getting better with each piece.

Replaced the transmission oil and made another DIY video. I think it was due after 22 years and 68,000 miles.
