Doin' the BOSE dance

Is it just me or does complication seems to be the new hallmark of the "expensive" sound system? The sound goes from nothing to far too loud with the volume wheel. After reading I'm assuming it's in the mode where it automatically adjusts itself. I have not been successful in getting the soft keys to disengage the feature. Going to start from scratch today any tips appreciated, I never thought I'd reach the day I had to study to operate a car stereo; that's some sorry %%%%.
