First thing I'd do is take off the serpentine belt and check the condition of the idler pulleys and accessories like the water pump, etc.. You want to know if it's in the engine or a bad bearing in the idlers or accessories. Check for play and looseness. I had an idler pulley wear out which made a similar sound. Not quite that dramatic though.
