991? Heck no! 1989 RUF CTR TWIN TURBO YELLOWBIRD

Tired of watching Porsche's become more like BMW's? Sports cars becoming more like GT's? Porsche worrying more about cup holders than cup racers?
If so, then check this out, a 1989 RUF CTR TWIN TURBO YELLOWBIRD for sale. Watch the video and see what it really means to drive a Porsche.

How awesome is that?!?

DenverSteve 01-18-2012 09:03 PM

Cute car. Not $279,000 cute but cute. I can buy a GT2 for under $100,000 and either way neither one can drive faster than I do in my Boxster. But cute.

Wouldn't even consider it, if I was shopping in that price point it wouldn't be for an old design 911, those are 458 Italia / Scud Spyder numbers..

I've seen that video before, that car is an animal!! Not to mention the serious attachments on the driver (Stefan Roser). A quarter million plus is large money, but I doubt that car would depreciate much.

I'll be happy with one of these.

Not a 993 GT2 or a 997 GT2. Maybe a 996 series GT2.

I always liked the Boxster with an Italian injection

I only wear underwear when I'm out on a long drive . If I have a breakdown, my thong can double as a fan belt .

You don't understand what this car is. The Ferraris are fantastic cars, but the Ruf CTR is a legend. This is more comparable to the F40 than the run-of-the-mill Ferraris that they're churning out now.

The driving experience would be so different from a 996 GT2, you wouldn't even think they were related cars. 600 pound weight difference!

See how the CTR is steered with all 4 wheels, I can just feel the steering wheel twitching and shaking watching that video. Compare that to a 996 and tell me which car would be more fun. I'm not asking about faster, more fun. Completely different things.

Thanks for underestimating me, I know what it is, I get Excellence, I still wouldn't buy it. People like the Veryon too, I wouldn't buy that either. I'd much rather have the GT Street RS.

Comparing it to a modern Ferrari makes me think that you don't get it.

This car is legendary and is certain to be bought by someone with a Porsche collection (hence the price). Its not a car that someone off the street would buy to drive to the country club - that's what 458 Italia's are for!

These are the cars that made Porsche legendary. They were wicked to drive and the most common statement was that the car was trying to kill the driver. It took huge heuvos and skill to master them.

If I said I'd rather buy a condo I guess you wouldn't get that either.....

i've often thought about building a poor man's yellowbird. it's 'just' a modified 964 (currently second cheapest of the 911's after the 996). you could do all the standard lightening mods (seats, RS carpet and door cards, sound insulation, lexan, etc.) safety mods (cage, harness, etc.) suspension (964 already has coil-overs) and brakes easily enough, and can buy knock-off ruf front bumpers, etc., everywhere (note the yellowbird didn't have flares to reduce aerodynamic drag and maximise top speed).

regarding the engine, i am of the understanding there were two versions; a ctr 1 and ctr 2. one had a completely built engine, but the other was built on a stock engine. this is cool, as the higher compression of a n/a engine gives you more lower rpm torque and smooths-out the lag from a big turbo(s). i think they tucked the intercoolers in the rear wheel wells like the 959. anyways, there's lots of threads on the pelican turbo forum on how to turbo a n/a aircooled engine on the cheap, so do-able.

ok, now get back to arguing about something that has no right/wrong answer.
