There have been a few reported problems:

The most serious is the Rear Main seal leak. It is a simple oil leak and no big deal if you don't care about drips on the floor. However, the cause is unclear. For years Porsche has been replacing the engine after repeated problems rather than fixing the issue. PCA chats suggest it is caused by the drive shaft not being sufficiently braced and therefore taking the seal out of round. Bottom line, there is no immediate solution in sight but it is not a make or break issue for anyone unless the seal becomes a gusher.

Other issues are leaking coolant tanks, leaking oil fill valves, defective oil separators and random sensor failures. None of these are critical if repaired promptly. Some can get expensive.

2000 Boxster here. Consumer Report gave it a better than average report, specifically for 2000. I used that reason to rationalize the purchase.
