if you are buying a five year old Boxster I STRONGLY urge you to check out the S model. It will have a better resale and the extra ooomph when merging onto highways and passing slow drivers is worth every cent. And as far as the brakes, when it comes to safety you never have enough stopping power.

I have a 2000 w/ 65K miles and love it too!!! Just had my first "known issue" with the water reservoir developing a leak and needing to be replaced. Check the cap on the reservoir and see if it ends in 00 or 01. If it ends in 00, replace the cap ($20 at the dealer) with the revised 01 cap. I think it helps with pressure relief to try and keep your tank from cracking.

I don't have any RMS issues. I have one pulley and one of the radiator fans making some noise so I'm replacing the bearings soon.

Other than those it's been maintenance only.

For "S" or not, if you have driven anything with more HP, you may want to go with an "S". The Boxster was my favorite car to drive until I got the 928. It feels so good to be shoved back in the seat w/ 320HP that I don't miss driving the Boxster as much. That's good for me since it's my wife's DD, but if it had more power it would be my favorite automobile by far. :D

couple problems I have had

upper and lower a-arms had to be replaced as I was hearing annoying creaking. I am starting to hear it again 2 years later.

air conditioning wheeze fixed with new grommet

vibrations at 80 mph and above. Still can not get this fixed. Have tried everything, including an entire new set of wheels and tires.

and this biggest one. I had to have my clutch replaced at 23000 miles. Porsche paid for the clutch as even they could not believe it. They did not pay for the mechanic to fix it however.

My brakes wore at 44,000 miles, I changed them myself... very easy and much less expensive (about 100 buckes per wheel).

I do love the car very much, but I have had my fair share of problems, and the car only has 45,000 miles on it.

There have been a few reported problems:

The most serious is the Rear Main seal leak. It is a simple oil leak and no big deal if you don't care about drips on the floor. However, the cause is unclear. For years Porsche has been replacing the engine after repeated problems rather than fixing the issue. PCA chats suggest it is caused by the drive shaft not being sufficiently braced and therefore taking the seal out of round. Bottom line, there is no immediate solution in sight but it is not a make or break issue for anyone unless the seal becomes a gusher.

Other issues are leaking coolant tanks, leaking oil fill valves, defective oil separators and random sensor failures. None of these are critical if repaired promptly. Some can get expensive.

2000 Boxster here. Consumer Report gave it a better than average report, specifically for 2000. I used that reason to rationalize the purchase.
