I currently own a 2001 Boxster base 2.7 litre. I only have had it 6 months but like it very much. Does not have a ton of power but enough for me(217hp). I test drove a secondhand 911 about 15 years ago and loved it. I promised myself I would get one but did not.Why because I wanted good air. cond. I believe air. cond. was not that good in those days and I wanted heated seats(i live in Canada!) as well. Well the Boxster has great a/c, good heated seats and was reasonably priced. I find the later years water cooled 911s dont have the feel or the good noise of the air cooled. Boxster sounds great. Hope this helps! One more thing is you might find the occasional seats in the 911 handy.

I have a 99 Boxster right now and love it. Previously I had a 71 911t but my biggest issue with the air cooled engines was the noise level in the cabin. Don't know about you but I worry about hearing loss due to sustained noise levels above 86 db. My 911T had 96 db at idle and over 100 db with the radio on and 70 mph. You might take that into consideration for your choice.
