Seeking Advise

I found two used 2.5 ( I think) engines at the reseller that sold me the Boxster, he wants 3500 /3800. Here's my questions:

1)what is my 2.5 worth as a core?

2) What would you guys offer him? He's giving a 12 month warranty, I don't want that, it will only turn into a 6 month anyway. (potential negotiating point to bail on the warranty)

3) What do you guys think is a decent price for an engine in/out at my mechanic's with clutch pack included, his clock hour is 70

Thanks you guys

PS No IMS service in rebuilt, not purchasing it

A typical dismantler base 2.5L engine sells for $3,000-$3,500. Check eBay. Price will vary depending on mileage (and seller).

For $3,500-$4,500, the seller should be including the 60K service parts (and maybe even a new water pump or alternator) so your engine is ready to run as soon as its installed. Again, higher prices will also be reflected in lower mileage engines.

As a standalone core, your blown 2.5L core might be worth $500.

Engine in/out is around $800-$1,800 depending on the shop. If you're purchasing the engine from them, then they should give you a break on the replacement labor but if you are bringing the engine to them, then expect $1,200-$1,800. Also, remember that the shop will have to do some of the 60K service to get the car on the road again (oil, coolant, etc). They might include this in the replacement price but most likely not so expect several hundered more here.

Clutch parts are $600+. Labor to install will depend on the shop. Again, if you're buying the engine from the same shop and having them do the remove/install, they might not charge anything for the clutch labor. Otherwise, expect $200-$500 additional.

What a clown, I wonder how many times my salesman figured he could screw me? He has no idea whether the IMS has even been checked in the rebuilt, he want's me to put 6k in it then trade it in a year, yeah that sounds like an excellent plan...back to zero.
