Anyone use DEPO Taillights?

Just cusious is anyone has purchased clear or smoked DEPO LED tail lights for their Boxster? Were they a great fit/replacement? Quality? Durability?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thank YOu

Andre

i have the smoked. no issues in over a year. they're not an exact fit for the older ones (slihtly more recessed) but it's only noticible if you look. no rain seepage, etc. cheap and easy mod.

bulkman 08-03-2011 02:18 PM

Good to know, thanks Tony

Smoked!...though not apparent in the first photo :)

bulkman 08-05-2011 03:24 AM

WhipE350...Those are the same ones I ordered. Were they plug and go? What did you do for reverse and signal bulbs? LED?

I wanted to change all my front and rear lights to LED, but seems that it won't be that easy.

Just installed my smoke DEPO tailights.... BUT the outside LEDs don't do anything!! Are the outside LEDs brake light??? The inner LEDs work with my brakes...but the outter ones don't do anything. Would it have anything to do with the "small" outter corner lights I removed, as they don't fit in the new DEPO assemblies?

Thanks,

Dre

WhipE350 08-13-2011 06:52 PM

I didn't do anything special with the bulbs, just installed as is. The outside light is part of the parking lights and the Depo don't have it...instead you get just a reflector.

But you have two sets of LEDs per light right? One inner and one outter by the reflector...My LED by the outter reflector won't work!!

Thanks for your help!

Dre

WhipE350 08-16-2011 06:38 PM

Dre, darn good question. Is it maybe just for looks?

jhandy 08-17-2011 07:54 AM

DRE,
I just ordered and installed the depo lights as well. The outside LEDs are the rear fog lights, and just the drivers side works anyway.

So what I did was to plug the outside LEDs into the rear light blub spot, NOT the Brake light spot, but the spot that lights up as part of the rear night lights. The problem is that the wire is too short. So to avoid cutting the wire, I cut the plastic to allow the wire to pull over to the spot.

Now I have night LEDs and LED brake lights.
bulb turn and reverse lights. and bulb drivers fog light.

WhipE350 08-17-2011 03:59 PM

That's right, I knew that...just becoming forgetful :). Ya it only comes on with the fog lights and on one side. Porsche must have figured that when we turn on our fog lights we are actually in fog and it would be helpful if some one doesn't rear end because of the limited sight.

That is cool what you did, I'll have to take one back off and try that. LED parking lights nice!

bulkman 08-18-2011 05:39 PM

Good idea!!! Thanks

I've had them for about 6 months. Love them.

gthompson999 08-24-2011 06:09 PM

@Shawn - do you have a full rear picture?

Your car looks great BTW.

WhipE350 08-24-2011 06:16 PM

Actually Shawn's pic is exactly how mine look, neither of my photos seemed to show a real life representation of them. On my Guards Red they look really nice, I've not had one person say anything but positive which surprised me for an inexpensive after market system.

Depo LED Lights

Thanks for your write up on the Depo LED rear lights.
I was high bidder on a eBay pair and I am deciding if I should pay for the lights depending on your favorable recommendation.
Do you have LED night lights as well as LED brake lights and LED turn signals and LED back up lights?
You said you were able to install the right side fog light bulb only.
Did I get it all correct?
Is there anything about on the Depo set up that is lacking compared to the the factory rear lights?
Thanks.

WhipE350 09-07-2011 05:25 PM

I think only my brake lights are led. There is another set of leds, as guys have indicated things can be wired to utilized more. Let me check again, I can never remember but I think there are two sets of led but I'm not sure how they are utilized, maybe someone else can quickly remember.

Where'd you get that spoiler from and how does it work with the stock spoiler?

AndrewG 04-27-2012 04:26 PM

You can reroute the wires so one of the sets of LEDs feeds the rear running lights and the other set of LEDs feeds the brake. I have my DEPO lights set that the inside set of LEDs are always on when my lights are on and the outside set for brakes. It takes a little patience to feed the wire plug through the light assembly but worth it.

I peeled back the grommet, moved the other wires out of the way and still could not get the plug to fit in that little space. Then being impatient I got out the drill gun. :D
don't do this without moving all the wires out of the way. But with two 1/8 holes it cleared enough space.

I'll miss that parking light though. I use that all the time when I leave the car parked in a dimly lit parking lot. makes the curious think someone's in the car.

EDIT:
You don't lose the parking light after all. But strangely after i start the car and turn on the lights the rear lights will only turn on if i turn the lights off and then turn them back on again. Also, its a good idea to have some touch up paint handy. I had some chipping under the old tail lights and Depo lights have a slightly smaller footprint which revealed the paint chip.

Perfectlap 03-03-2013 10:22 AM

Wow these LEDs are way bright. I had the parking light on around dusk, still plenty of daylight, and you could see it bright as heck a block and a half away. Excellent for distracted drivers who get too close to parked cars. And lately I have become paranoid about parking to close to the curb, i will often park around the corner but sometimes its unavoidable. This mod gets six cylinders on the bang for buck scale.

Steve03986 03-04-2013 04:50 AM

Have the smoked DEPO LED taillghts. I did a bit of re-wiring so the inboard and outboard LEDs function as brake lights. No issues with fitment or function.

How did you wire it? I would like to do the same thing. Thanks.

Steve03986 03-04-2013 05:34 PM

I did it last summer, but recall it involved cutting the + and - wires from the parking light, splicing-in extensions to each of those wires, and then splicing into the + and - from the brake lights. There is not much room to work with inside each light fixture. Hope this helps.

That sounds simple enough, thanks!

So I tapped into the brake leads and then tapped into the outside LED/parking LED. It works, but not all the time. Sometimes, the first press of the brakes results in only the original brake LED's coming on. The second press results in both the inside and outside LED' illuminating. Does yours do this?

particlewave 03-08-2013 03:30 PM

This is very common...there's a solution floating around on one of these threads. Need a resistor somewhere, but can't remember where and I haven't gotten around to playing with mine yet.

Seal Leak on Depo Lights

I just purchased a set of the Depo lights and have what looks like glue leaked around the seal. Anyone else have that problem? The seller is wiling to refund my money but if they are like that then I may keep them. Hard to see the seal from a few feet distance.
